Log-in as Administrator and see if this helps.

I have tried running each app as administrator and as myself (with admin rights) makes no difference. I have noted that ccApp is shown as a running process (432kb) but with no user name in Task Manager.

What I mean is to log-off from your current session and log-in as Administrator.

For example, Log-off. When the welcome screan appears, hold Alt and Ctrl keys, and press "Delete" twice. Now type Administrator, type the passowrd (if any), and log-in. Now you should be able to reinstall NIS.

Post the result here :)

Thanks Vejdin, I have now done that but the same problem exists - every symantec program when trying to open (even the downloaded setup.exe to start a fresh download) ends up with the same "Failed to initialize" message.

I have tried to uninstall from "Add and Remove Programs" and when I click on Change or Remove nothing happens I mean "nothing"???

I can uninstall Live Update but prior to completion it fails with a message that states "Error 1404 - Could not delete key"

It seems to me like a serious registry problem which I have no idea what caused it or how to fix it. I can't use Symantec support as their is no process available without downloading a helper file (even to Chat) and all of these "Fail to initialize"

What the h*** is going on???

Why don't you try to Download and run the Norton Removal Tool. Log-in as Administrator again, and remove your Norton product using this tool. Then you can take a look at this article: A Norton Problem and its Solution: In short, find the file MSVCP71.DLL and change it's security permissions. It's located in C:\Windows\System32 folder on my PC.

To change it's security permissions, be sure that you don't use "Simple File Sharing": Click the start menu button, then click "run" and type: control folders then press enter. Go to "View" tab - Advanced Settings and then uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing". Now find MSVCP71.DLL, right click - properties, go to "Security" tab, click "Add" and enter Users and click Ok to confirm. Restart your PC and see if the problem still occurs. Actually, you can try this workaround before you use the Norton Removal Tool.

I did as recommended. I first checked the security tab of MSVCP71.dll (many of them) and all had USERS enabled. I then logged in as Administrator and ran Norton Removal Tool. When I clicked on Setup in the WinZip self extractor tool to run the program, nothing happens???

At least you have identified some others who have had this problem so I am not going mad (yet)!!!

I had the same problem, I've tried to run Norton Removal Tool but nothing happened. After an hour the removal tool's screen suddenly appeared :smileyvery-happy:

Have you tried to run it again? Restart your PC and try again. If nothing happens, just wait, it will run.

Exactly as Vejdin said , it sure could take a while.

Please be patient

hi russhart, et al. - this feels like a permissions situation. the error with ccApp, LiveUpdate, the failure of the removal tool to run, activeX failing; too many failures to be something like a bad install or bad update.

can you elaborate on what this means?

"The only change I have made in the last 2 days was to convert my basic disks to dynamic ones but on reboot there were no issues???"

how was this accomplished?

mel

ccApp also crashes when you close down computer  been doing this with  Nis 2007  360  theres always been a problem with this .

Okay here's the latest.

I finally managed to use the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode only. I downloaded a fresh copy of NIS 2008, ran the install program (this now works) and then received a message halfway through the install process that said "A setup error has occurred that requires a reboot. It also compiled an error log which uploaded to Symantec.

I have now been in touch with Support who suggested that I check the registry for an anomaly and then re-install as a fresh new user with admin rights. Well I had already done that from a previous Google search.

Their other option was to re-install Microsoft .NET Framework 3 and then NIS 2008. Result same error message halfway through the process. It's now back to them.

MelodicWynd: My earlier comment on the "only change made" referred to the fact that I changed all my SATA drives to dynamic ones and when I rebooted, NIS started up fine. It was the day after that I encountered my "Failed to initialize" messages.

Cheers

I had similar problems with NAV2008 (installtion and executing). Though my disc was already a dynamic one. I had to repartition the disc and format it to get it back to a normal disc. Now NAV2008 will install and run.

Hello

I have EXACTLY the same issue, a day after converting my discs to Dynamic discs using the Manage utility. I have NIS2006. I've tried re-installing, un-installing and I've tried running the NIS2008 removal tool (nothing happened at all - left for about 36 hours!!!). :mansad:

I get all of the above symptoms and can't run any NIS apps at all. I've tired all of the suggestions above and I am very PC literate. However,  I'm now really really stuck. Every other application seems to run absolutely fine by the way!!

Please can someone look into this???

Kind Regards

- Lee

I finally solved the problem a few weeks ago. After running a program from Symantec support that logged all the activities running when I tried to re-install NIS2008, I was asked to submit the resulting zip file tback to them. This was bounced by their server as being too large (10Mb) ????

I then logged a complaint with their management team that the help so far was inadequate and that their own system would not accept a file that their own program had generated. Result - no response.

I then solved the problem myself by totally removing all of NIS2008 and installing Bitdefender Internet Security 2008. No problems runs smoothly and I have to say a great program.

I have been a loyal Norton user since 1996, but I shall never buy another product from them again. NIS is flaky and the support is disappointing.

hi lee - just to clarify: everything was fine and then you coverted to dynamic discs and you began to get "failed to initialize" errors when booting your computer while using NIS 06. you ran the removal tool (works for version before 04 I think) and it failed to run. i'm not sure what happened, but i wouldreverese the conversion if it were all possible, then uninstall NIS, redo the conversion and then reinstall. is that a possibility for you?

Hi

The trouble is, that I can't uninstall it at all. I'm logged in as the Administrator, but I can physically delete any of the Norton folders or files, or registry keys, as I get 'Access Denied'. When I run Add/Remove programs it does nothing!

I'm equally as pi$$ed off with Norton for this, but I'm quite sure that we're not the only 2 people in the world with this issue, so there must be a reasonable fix for this. I noticed that the Norton Removal Tool was for NIS2008 and I can't seem to find a 2006 version. Anyone got a tool that removes NIS2006? I can't upgrade to NIS2008 due to this issue, so I am really in limbo and to be honest, I'm not even sure whether I am secure against viruses/hacks or not, so it's quite worrying...

I urge anyone from Norton to raise this as a serious issue. The issue is DEFINITELY with the Dynamic discs, so they must be able to run some tests and provide a patch etc...

Hi Mel

I did think of that, but I can't find a way of converting mu HD back to standard discs. I would definitely be up for trying that out, so if anyone knows a way of un-converting my dynamic discs, then please let me know!

I converted via Control Panel | Administrative Discs | Computer Management | Disc Management  (Windows XP SP3)

Thanks & Regards

hi lee - the removal tool for 2008 is the same as the one for 07 or 06, so i don't think that's the problem. i did stumble across this article that contains a methodology for reversing the dynamic disc change (see the "workaround" section) that doesn't include a nuke 'n' pave. i'm assuming that you already tried removing NIS in safe mode - i'm not sure that if the removal tool fails that it would even matter, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Hi all

I have an update to this nightmare:

I booted in Safe Mode and the Removal tool finally decided to run! I then removed Norton completely and disconnected my LAN cable. After a reboot into normal mode, I re-installed NIS2006. I then upgraded to NIS2007 (as I had upgraded previously). 2006 seemed to work, but the minute the upgrade went to run I got all kinds of initialization errors...

I'm now back to square one. My plan now is to remove again and then try and install NIS2007 from scratch instead of upgrading. My disks remain dynamic for the time being. I think if that doesn't work, then I will be using another AV product and I will ask Norton for a refund for the remainin license.

Wish me luck  :-|
