Same thing happened to me, except I got NIS 2008 as a result of renewing. I followed the bouncing ball to install it on my laptop. It crashed with a windows error Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly." and gave me a 60-second countdown. I thought that "fortunately" the install finished before the 60 seconds expired. Now my firewall (Zonealarm) won't work. My connection to my network and the internet will not work. I cannot open Network Connections. Reboot does not help. I cannot get to Norton uninstall. I have a totally useless laptop now. I have already paid for another year of support, but reading your posting, I guess I cannot expect help from Norton. I have Windows XP with all the latest updates, if that makes a difference. The drive light constantly blinks on the laptop as if it is doing something, but nothing appears in the task manager window (Ctrl-Alt-Del) that would explain it.

hi kewaynco - i'm not exactly sure why you would want to install two firewalls - this is likely to cause problems, particularly with respect to  your internet connectivity. you can download SymNRT and run it in safe mode to get NIS uninstalled. the DCOM server process error is sometimes associated with a trojan known to thwart AV installations (kill-av, of which there are many, many variants). it may be possible to download the utility from this article and run a safe mode scan to get it out.
