Moving to a new thread…
Thank goodness that someone else is having the same problem. That sounds really close to what mine is doing. Now if we can get an answer I will be happy. I was worried because I searched the net and had 2 chat sessions with no resolution. Anybody out there have some answers for us?!?
I’m sure you will get some good help here and it is a place where there are plenty of Norton staffers as well as us volunteers. So please be patient despite your experience with chat.
I would like to help too. It seems that you have serious problems. Here are some suggestions:
- run the Norton Removal Tool
- clean up any temporary files (from start menu, click run, type %temp% press enter, delete any existing files. In addition, run Disk Cleanup)
- remove any other security software, including Windows Defender
- Disable System Restore
- Turn off your internet connection
I could not guarantee that this could help solve your problem, but this is what I do when I have such issues.
hi dbowman - if Vejdin's suggestions don't help, please let us know the exact text of the error you are seeing - it will help narrow the field of possible problems.

I tried the above suggestion. I ran the Norton Removal Tool, then I disabled the internet, disabled the resore and the windows defender as well as automatic updates just in case. The NIS installed without error and everything seemed fine. Then I reenabled the internet and automatic updates and rebooted the system. I received the same “blue-screen-o-death” saying something about a paging error and completed a memory dump. Then I booted to safe mode, I now have restored my system and I am looking for suggestions on anything else to try.
This is getting very frustrating. It is very hard for me to accept that I have XP desktop and a Vista laptop and I can not get NIS 2008 to install on the XP because my system will not reboot after the install. I have not tried on the Vista machine because I am gun shy . Despite 2 chat sessions with Symantec, 2 users forums and help from technical friends, I still am forced to run my XP system with no NIS 2008 software because it puts my system in an unbootable state. I am very disappointed in the Symantec technical support. I probably can not return my NIS 2008 beause I have been trying to install since mid April but I probably need to cut my losses and try McAfee or Zone Alarm because I do not like to run on an unprotected PC.
So, now you can install NIS, but you can't boot your PC, right ?
I'm not sure what is your current NIS version, but try to install the latest version: Download
As you have a valid product key for NIS 2008, you can also install NIS 2007 just to see whether you will encounter the same problem. Then try to install NIS 2008 over NIS 2007 (NIS 2008 should remove the previous version for you).
If you still have this problem (You wrote something about paging error and memory dump), Right-click on "My Computer", select properties from the menu, then click the advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click settings. Uncheck: "Send an administrative alert", and use the drop-down menu under "Write debugging information" and select "None". Click OK. Install NIS again, and reboot your PC. This is just a suggestion, I'm not sure if this can solve your problem (probably not) but try it.
Thanks for the help. Before all this started, I had NIS 2006 and I tried to install NIS2008 over it. But when it failed I ran the uninstall tool and lost my 2006 ver. because I sent the CD in for my rebate. I am not technical, but the problem to me seems to be in the networking area. I could not install NIS2008 w/o my XP crashing during the install. In 1 of the chat sessions, Symantec tech. did the install from their site ( remote control of my PC) and it also failed in the same spot during the install. After I disabled my internet, LAN connection and System Restore, it did install w/o crashing. However, I then enabled the internet, my LAN and System Restore and restarted my system. It started to boot and right after the “windows XP” window it hangs and gives me the Blue Screen ( I have auto restart turned off ) and says I have attempted to page in a NON-page area and gives me a dump; but it will not restart. This information leads me to believe that the problem is in the network area, but I am not technical enough to resolve it. I am still amazed that the Symantec tech. can not use this information to at least tell me what to look for. Thanks for your suggestions, I will try them and see what happens.
First I recommend you to set Debugging information to "none", as I already explained. If nothing happens, restore It's previous settings. Then, just disable system restore, and restart again, to see if your PC will start normally with NIS installed. And Step 3: Turn on system restore again, and disable your Local Area Connection, restart your PC.
By doing this, you should understand at least what causes this blue screen. I'll wait for you to reply so I can give your more suggestions :)
OK. I disabled my internet connect and my LAN. I unchecked admin alert and set debugg to none. I installed NIS 2008 from my CD and it installed.I did not turn Restore OFF because it said I would lose all of Restore points and I did not want that to happen. Once installed, I enabled my LAN and Internet connections, turned off Windows firewall, so I could activate the product. It activated and I have been using the internet for other things. I have NOT tried to reboot because I finally have a working PC and I need to get some things done. I will run live update in a few minutes to update my virus protections. So, when I try to reboot later today and if I get the BLUE Screen, what should I do to resolve that ? Also, you asked what version I had; I checked after the install and it is 15.0.0.60.
If something fails, you can try with the latest version 15.5.0.23: Download
If you still cannot boot Windows, disable LAN again, and reboot. If Windows boots normally, I suppose you should reinstall the driver for your network adapter, if you have experience with installing drivers. I'm not sure if my suggestions will help you, this is just an experiment. I've never had similar problem, but I would like to help you somehow.
I rebooted this morning and it did fail with the Blue Screen, same paging in a non-page area and the stop code was :0x00000050(0xf8c25000,0x00000001,0x804d9e2e,0x00000000) The newer version was tried by the Symantec rep and it also failed . I am up in safe mode right now, and there is no way to disable the lan connection because the network connections screen is blank. So I will try the chat one more time with Norton, then I guess I go to the store and buy Zone Alarm or something. Any other suggestions that you may have would be appreciated .
I would also recommend you to restore BIOS default settings, and I hope your computer's harware is installed and working correctly. Bad sectors on hard drives, bad RAM, incorrect BIOS settings can also cause blue screens. Easy way to access BIOS is to press the "Del" key from keyboard or F2 key (rarely), after you turn on your PC. Search for something like "Restore default settins", "Reset configuration", "Load optimized default" or something similar. To check your disk drives for errors, right click on a drive - properties - tools and click the "Check now" button. Make sure that all options are checked, and click Start.
Could you give more information about this error, when blue screen appears. I wonder what is the file that causes this. You may also have a corrupt windows installation.
The system always fails at the same point. I start the boot, the Dell logo comes on for a few seconds and then it goes to the Windows XP loading screen for a about 15 seconds and then the screen goes dark and begins to boot and about 5 seconds later it fails to the Blue Screen ( because I have auto restart disabled]. Message says it is trying to “page in a non-page area” and the system has stopped to avoid causing damage to the system. So, whatever the system is doing right after the “starting Windows XP” disappears is when it fails.I will scan the disk for errors, but I am not very experienced in playing with the BIOS.
It is up to you to decide whether to change settings in BIOS or not, but sometimes restoring settings to default helps solves problems with booting windows. You should not change other settings, just look for "Restore default settings" or "Load optimized defaults" or something similer, then exit.
Since when you use your PC? Is it new? Have you ever thought of reinstalling windows and starting from scratch? If the Symantec tech was right about a missing file, then reinstalling windows should solve your problem, although this may be quite inconvenient.
This is what I did, not sure what it means.
I ran scan disk in Safe Mode to check for sector errors. I tried to reboot , same failure. Rebooted in safe mode and tried to boot with networking option, same failure. Rebooted in safemode and used the "reboot with last settings that worked correctly" option and the system did come up . However, the NIS option will NOT start even though it shows on the desktop and in the programs areas. I tried several times. This is why I think it is a NIS problem, it is the only software that I load or run that causes me a problem. I ran NIS 2006 on this system with no problems.
My PC is about 7 years old but I did I total new install of XP in Feb. of 2007 ( not an upgrade) and it has been working fine up until I tried to load NIS 2008. My XP system is totally up to date ( except for SP3) and has not been causing me any problems at all.
Will using the "Default setting for BIOS" cause me a problem if I decide to go back to a Restore Point using System Restore?
Look what I found on Microsofts web site: Possible Resolutions to STOP 0x0A, 0x01E, and 0x50 Errors
It is more likely that this is caused by driver conflict, in your case. You can get the latest drivers for your PC, and/or contact a tech again, an try to solve the problem.
Feeling that maybe my XP was failing on reboot due to it trying to start NIS 2008, I booted in safe mode, went to MSCONFIG and in the startup I disabled the NIS 2008 exe file, figuring I will start it myself after the system was up and running. My system will now reboot, but when I try to start NIS 2008 from the desktop or Program files, it will not start. Chat sessions with Symantec are virtually useless. All of my other software works fine, it is only when I install NIS 2008 do I have a problem. I have used the Norton software removal tool and reinstalled 5 times, and it is always the same result. I am totally out of patience and very UPSET with Norton because they have no clue as to what I should do; they tell me to contact Microsoft.
