Ok here's the latest update from my end. I just got done reinstalling the latest build of NIS 2008 that was provided to me after I uninstalled my store purchased copy on the PC that it was initially removed from. Again after having installed NIS the website's videos are still being blocked, so again I uninstalled NIS 2008 and presto the videos are now working again. The only thing different this time is I did not allow NIS 2008 to run its updates after installing. So the problem clearly has to be in the NIS 2008 product itself and how it handles Windows Media Player 11. Again all things are pointing to Symantec's NIS 2008 as the culprit in these videos being blocked so therefore neither my PC maker nor Microsoft are willing to help troubleshoot and solve the problem. If Symantec is unwilling to or cannot help me solve this issue I may excercise my right to the 60 day money back guarentee to buy a new product that does not do this blocking of streaming video as it is a big inconvenience and not having a PC secured with internet protection in order to view a few select websites isnt an option.
Again thanks in advance for any help that can solve this issue.
Are these machines all connected to the same network?
If so, Enter your settings in Firewall
Options->Norton Internet Security->Personal Firewall->Trust Control
Share your network if they are all together.
Also, are you on XP, Media Center, or Vista. I am assuming you are on XP.
Did you set WMP11 to share?
Yes they are all on the same network. Now I have the setting set to share and Ive seen a little bit of progress. Now videos play but the video and audio are not in sync on either of the 2 pc that have NIS installed. On the other PC that I have removed it from it plays fine without any issues just as if like I was watching a DVD. One PC is running Vista Home Premium and the other 2 run Windows XP Home. So are there certain ports that I need to make sure that NIS is allowing to be opened as it seems that there may be data lost that is causing the videos to play out of sync. Actually the audio plays fine but the video is like playing as if its like a slideshow instead of normal streaming active video. But like I said on the machine with no NIS they play just fine. At least I am now seeing some progress after changing to a shared setting, although I do not see why it needs to be sharing as the pc’s themselves are independent and not sharing any printers or document folders or anything just all connected to the same router for net access.
Because you are sharing media, that's why we need to trust/share the network.
The problem is that XP Home/Pro and Vista Home/Business is non media center which causes this problem.
Try the following
Go into the Firewall settings and you might want to try setting your WMP to Allow access.
Also, try adding the IP Addresses of your machines into the Trusted Network
Let me know
Ok I have tried both suggestions with no effect in correcting the issue. Also what I find odd is that even when I boot with NIS disabled the problem continues. NIS installs something so far into the operating system that the only way to resolve this issue is to uninstall NIS and then run the Nortan removal tool.
The network interface is onboard and run from an Nividia chipset.
The motherboard is an Asus P5N-E SLI
with Nforce 650i Northbridge and Nforce 430i Southbridge
It sounds like you may be using an XBox console to stream the video. Most non-Microsoft firewalls seem to have issues with this. There a couple of posts that may help you:
Ports that you need to open: http://www.bestsecuritytips.com/xfsection+article.articleid+74.htm
Instructions on how to configure your firewall to work with X360: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/default.mspx
Our research has shown that installing Vista SP1 fixes the base problem as well. I haven't heard of this occuring on Windows XP before.

No your misunderstanding I am not attempting to stream video to or from the Xbox 360 I was trying to view videos in Windows Media format from the Xboxlive website on any of the 3 PC’s that have the Nortan internet software installed. Only when it is removed will those files stream from the site with no problems or issues so it is clearly an issue with something in how NIS configures itself when installed. Just to make sure I have even ran it on my dualboot setup under Linux the videos play fine again on that one with minor breakup. Also I keep getting email from a purported Symantec employee wanting me to email him my IP#s. I have not responded for one I do not know if it is legit or not. Nor do I see how providing my IPs will help resolve this issue. One last thing I would like to try is installing NAV alone without the firewall but the NIS 08 does not seem to give any option to do a standalone NAV alone installation.
I’m sorry about the misunderstanding. If you can provide a specific URL we can try to reproduce the problem in-house.
Ok thanks. It seems to be about any videos that stream from the xboxlive website. Here is the page for the one's I have been trying to get to play properly. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/insidexbox/
When this issue first began I would get an error message and nothing would play, I dont know exactly what has changed but now I get the audio portion but no video that just remains blank. One common element between all three of these PC are they all Asus branded motherboards and all have the nvidia based chipset. So Im guessing this may be the issue and some incompatibity with something installed with NIS and the nvidia drivers are not working properly. This problem did not seem to happen until after my 2007 ran out and I replaced that with the 2008 version. Again it only happens the blank video streams that is when the NIS 2008 product is installed when its completely removed and the Nortan removal tool used to clean all NIS files the problem goes away.
We’ll try to reproduce this in-house but in the meantime, one of my co-workers has indicated that he has seen similar problems when pop-up blocking has been enabled. Do you have the add-on pack installed and if so, does disabling pop-up blocking make the problem go away?
Yes I have the addon pack installed but I do not see a place for the popup ad blocker settings and the only thing I have on and enabled is the spam filter protection. The privacy guard and parental controls are both set to off. I did again tried various settings in Windows Media Player 11's settings and I have had a little success as I now have a slideshow type video on the xboxlive set community main page with the video labeled "May 7 Community Confidential", the audio plays fine but the video is playing like a slideshow instead of in full motion. Again this leaves me to believe that the issue is something to do with NIS 08 and nvidia drivers conflicting in someway since messing with the various options under the perfomance tab for video is what allowed the video to partially play. Again its only this one video all the others still remain completely blank with video and only audio can be heard clearly. Nvidia has released a new videocard driver which I have downloaded and may install to see if that resolves the issue on my main PC that is running Vista Home Premium. The other 2 both are running Windows XP home. One thing I forgot to mention all three of these PC also run on nvidia based videocards. Again the reason I think there may be conflicts with NIS and nvidia software causing this headache.
I had a similar problem and was able to resolve it by working around an issue with the pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer. Media Player relies on these Explorer Settings....
Even though you may select "disable" on IE pop-up blocker via the shortcut on the IE menu bar, there's an additional IE setting that's killing pop-ups/streams.
Go to: Tool, Internet Options, Security Tab, Custom Level..., Miscellaneous section, "Use Pop-Up Blocker", Disable.
Streams popped right up after disabling.
Let NIS control pop-ups.
