Has anyone been able to run NIS 2009 without any lockup issues or other problems on startup and shutdown while running webroot spysweeper 5.8? This version spysweeper causes no issues with NIS 2008 that I have seen. I am running Vista Premium w/SP1. If I try running NIS 2009 with it, the system lockups at least half the time upon a reboot or startup. If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know. However, please don’t respond saying uninstall spysweeper. Thanks in advance.
I see there is. Sorry I did not ask there. Anyway, I asked for help with this situation. Your response is no help. What is going to be of help to me is people running both programs that are able to without the issue I am having. I don't know if anyone is able to run these two programs version together right now or not. As far as the Symantec employee (Reese) who kudoed your response, how do you honestly believe that is of any help when that person will not even post what they suggest should be done. Geesh, I asked for help, if it's too much to ask, then forget it,
Why would I be upset? I thought people came here to get help. That is what I'm trying to do so that others benefit as well. I would like to find a working resolution to this issue. I'm sure I'm not the only person having it. I have heard different reasons in regards to this same issue. I have seen others say the latest windows updates were causing it.
Therefore, once again, I'm sorry I did not post in the other thread. But, read the thread, and you will see my questions have not been answered. As far as the kudos system thing. I don't have a problem with it, but on the other hand, I do not feel the objective of the forums is to see who can get a kudo. The objective is for people to help each other when they can. That is my two cents worth on that, especially since the syn=mantec employee took time to give a kudo, but not help with my issue.
First of all anytime you run 2 programs doing the same job your going to get conflicts. NIS has antispyware built in. So adding Spy Sweeper isnt nessasry and its overlapping security. You do not need 2 real time spyware scanners. You can use SuperAntiSpyware on demand which is what I do.
This is exactly what I’m talking about. Responses like this help no one. While I trust norton to have top notch firewall and antivirus protection, I do not believe it has the best protection in regards to spyware. Everyone has there own opinion dieselman. I have ran spysweeper for years with NIS, and that is what I choose to run. I said I did not want to hear responses say uninstall it or its not needed. I asked for a resolution to the programs not working together like they have in the past. Can you not understand that?
DPMGR40, as suggested in the other thread, I doubt that you’ll reliably be able to get SpySweeper 5.8 and the '09 products to work together. Both have made changes that are incompatible with each other. I have a registry fix that appears to solve the problem. If you are comfortable making registry changes yourself I can send you additional instructions via the community Private Messenger system.
Wow you need to relax. Its neither a Norton or Webroot problem. Certain programs just cannot get along period. Like oil and water. Listen to Reese. If your wondering just how good NIS is simply look for reviews. PCMag gave it an editors choice. AV Comparitves rated it very good. Also Matt from removemalware.com did a video on it.

First of all, I apoligize for the stressful comments. Before I go any further, let me elaborate on a few things. As I stated already, everyone has their own opinions in regards to what is best when it comes to security programs. Not just people, businesses as well. I have worked in the computer industry in different areas and jobs for practically my entire working life. I have a degree in computer science and programming. When it comes to computers, I don't know it all, but I am very knowledgeable. When it comes to computers, I don't think anyone fits the know it all category. And, I'm not accusing you of that. Reviews on computer software are always changing. Norton has not always been among the best. Do I think they have a good product now? The answer is yes, if I didn't, I would not use it. However, norton has not always had a spyware solution. It only came about a few years ago. Have they improved it, I would say they have. But, I feel there are other spyware programs which can control spyware better than norton. Spysweeper has won countless awards for years in a row. It has always ran pretty well with my NIS packages.
Obviously this year, both programs have made changes. They always do. This is the first time it's ever been an issue. Do I believe the programs will end up working normally together? In time, yes. So, what would I think would be the ideal scenario? Both norton and webroot should both work on fixes to solve the problem. I don't believe one company should drop the ball and expect the other to do it. It's the responsibility of both companies.
There are plenty of people out there like me who want to use spysweeper. And, I would say of those people who want to use that and NIS together, most are not going to accept uninstalling spysweeper to reolve the problem. Thus, for those on the boards here who work with norton, let that be known, and let it be understood you need to do your part to help resolve the issue. And, I would tell you the same thing in regards to spysweeper. I can tell you that once people start complaining, they do work on resolving problems. Thus, Reese, take that the right way. You are a Symantec employee. The issue needs to be escalated to the problem resolution team and worked on.
As far as NIS 2009, I know this is not the only issue. It seems like NIS 2009 still has it's share of problems. Perhaps it came out too soon. Who knows? All I'm saying is the boards here prove NIS 2009 still has plenty of issues.
Now Reese, you mentioned something about making changes in the registry. First of all, I would like for you to message me and let me know what these changes do. Then, I would also like for you to send me the instructions for what you say will solve this problem. I may not get around to it this weekend, cause my dad just had surgery less than a week ago. But, once I get time, I have two systems, and I'm willing to try the fix and see if it works. If it does, fine. But, I still do not consider that to be a permanent fix. It is going to take both Norton and Symantec working together for that to happen. And, as I mentioned, I do believe that is something that can be feasibly done.
I have to jump in and say there is definitely a conflict with SpySweeper. Just check your NIS2009 security log and look at all the blocked attempts against it. There’s also another conflict with Dell Automated PC TuneUp but I guess that should go under another thread. Perhaps SpySweeper is the cause of the the freezing up and rebooting issues. Just a thought to Symantec.

DPMGR4, I have sent you additional instructions via the community Private Messenger system (please look for the in the upper right hand corner of any community page) for making changes to the registry that could solve this problem. Symantec has been researching this issue and is currently trying to contact WebRoot to report what we believe to be an inverted locking hierarchy problem in SpySweeper.
Keep in mind the 2 top anti spyware programs out there today are both free and take no resources to run. SuperAntiSpyware and Malware Bytes Anti Malware is where its at in today's world. Watch the videos here.

There is really no need to buy Spysweeper besides NIS
I can not speak for all operating system, but I have found a solution to this problem that works with windows vista premium SP1. First, look at this link and make this change.

After doing that, restart your computer. Bring up NIS and look at the CPU meters. Wait for the meters to drop indicating startup is done, then start spysweeper from the desktop. Wait for the spysweeper window to come up. Watch for the shields section to say they are loaded up, then you can proceed and do anything you wish.

I regret to inform after having no issues all day Saturday, I suddenly started having the same issues again. I have uninstalled Spysweeper 5.8, and went back to version 5.5.7.124. So, far everything is ok, with both programs loading up at startup. If anything changes, I will update the thread here and let those know that may be having this issue.
Hello there all you super gurus and knowledgeable IT people. First, let me say that all of you have by far more experience than I will ever have, and beyond that, I am just one small fry in a giant ecoflush of bad politics, sharks, and octapai. I've taken an interest in this thread because I've been researching various methods to remove staunch computer infections like virtumonde etc. I've read posts about NIS SAS, Webroot Spysweeper etc. I have used Norton extensively in the past few years, and I have experimented with other products as well. To further confuse things here, I can only say that my experience is such that every Friday at 3:30 - I am paid to have a beer if that means anything. Some here have mentioned that NIS 2009 and Spysweeper 5.8. whatever either slow their systems or bring it down (to where safemode has to be invoked to unload one or the other from the system startup). Nasty infections such as trojans and malware do (seemingly) masochistic devastation to MS operating systems in many different ways. Such as Virtumonde (and it's variants) - the first trait of this nasty attack is that it randomizes which files it infects, and thus no 2 experiences may be the same. The more complex these attacks become, the more sophisticated do the software security programs have to be in order to quash such attacks. Each different Company's detection, prevention, and removal engines work differently, and as such, can conflict with each other to the point of bringing duals and quads down to a snail's pace. From a business perspective, to try and make one's product interoperable with another is not really ideal, for the sake of protecting patents, etc. On the other hand, sometimes big industry names will tout a mix of one vendor with another (such as one who's virus protection rhymes with pc-chillin'). Security Software companies see a good model of protection by having a full suite of security components (like the NIS model). Other than a good review in labs (by names like PC Mag, Tom's Hardware, etc), I like to use a product that doesn't require a significant share of hardware resources, something that NIS 2009 (when available) seems to correct. These are just ideas that may factor into your equation of which security solution works best for you. Overall, there are a couple of different solutions that offer maximum protection with good versatility, and I am sure whichever one you may find, will do a good enough job if you surf wisely, and have a good backup system just in case. If you were to ask me what's the safest way to browse that would minimize your chance of infection, (especially when d/l torrents, videos, keygens, and other stuff like that) download and burn a linux distro. Burn it to a cd, and then surf using mozilla's browser. If you get d/l's, save them to a thumb drive that you can hook to a pc after your AV is loaded, and then scan it for possible infections ***before opening it***. You may even have a dedicated PC for surfing, that -when it gets infected, you can partition/format the drive, and then start surfing again. I certainly don't know much, but I have found a workaround to avoiding all out infection and privacy violation.

I will first mention that I have been a loyal customer of Norton as well as Webroot for years, and to this day I have valid subscriptions for both applications, that being Webroot AntiVirus/SpySweeper 6.0 valid until 6/18/09 & also NIS 2009 which has a remaining Sub of 166 days
Unfortunately both Webroot & Norton NIS have "NOT" been compatable since Webroot Spysweeper Up-graded too 5.8 & Norton NIS Up-graded too NIS 2009 from 2008
At this time, I my self have not been able to achieve what you seek, no matter what type of registry changes that have been applied
You will not be able to make them presently compatible with each other.
I've contacted Webroot with this issue, it now was sent to Webroot development, and they'll fix version 6 so it plays well with nis 2009.
It seems that Webroot knows what is causing the problems, by reproducing my problem.
advice from Webroot: use the stable version 5.5 untill the problem is solved (in version 6).

Received information regarding the release of new version 6.0.3.(build83) of Webroot Spysweeper which is compatible with NIS 2009. Customers with current subscription can get upgrade by contacting Webroot Support.
Confirmation Required: It will be better if anyone posted the problems with NIS 2009 and Webroot Spysweeper here check this; and let us know the results as I never used Spysweeper.

The post from Chris1 on this page, confirm that there was a version 6.0.3 but it was German and it also has issues. Not a good solution.

I just got off the phone with Webroot support (1.25 hours on hold) The tech stated that it is a known issue and will be addressed in version 6.1 which is due out in Feb 09.
For now he is emailing me some instructions to go back to version 5.5 which is stable with NIS 09.
Note: The tech said when reinstalling 5.5 to make sure that the "Version Gaurd" option was disabled. Other wise the software would just update itself to 6.0.2.39.
