NIS 2009 causing write errors on automated backup jobs

I have a new system with a Blu-ray drive that is capable of writing to dual-layer 50GB rewritable BD-RE discs.  I've been trying to use my backup software (Backup MyPC) to run automated unattended backup jobs, but it's been giving me occasional write errors that show up when the backup software goes to run a verify backup data operation.  It's only a fraction of a percent of the files backed up that are failing, but that's more than enough to make this useless as a backup strategy.

By process of elimination, I think I've narrowed it down to NIS 2009 that is causing the write errors (or that the Blu-ray drive is too sensitive to what NIS is doing, would be another way of looking at it).  I get almost no write errors of if I temporarily disable NIS prior to running the backup. Unfortunately, since these are scheduled autmomatic backup jobs that I'm running, I'd have to leave NIS disabled for long spans of time every day to make sure it doesn't interfere whenever the backup job starts, and this simply isn't an option for security purposes, as this is a system that is always online.

So I guess my question is, can anybody think of what exactly NIS might be doing that is interfering with the write process, but only infrequently?  Is there some way to prevent it from interfering with file access operations specific to the backup software?  If not, then can anybody think of another solution to my problem?
