I also have have NIS2009 installed on three systems:
Vista Home Premium, SP!
Vista Business, SP1
Vista Ultimate, SP1
All three computers have a different assortment of software and none had/have any problems with 09. I've also installed it for a friend that was leary of the upgrade and there were no issues with it either. I may be lucky since outside of a minor problem with Identity Safe on one machine, 09 has been a super product so far and I'm very happy with it.
Just on the slim possibility that you have some malware interfering with your installation:
1) Be sure your Windows Firewall is ON
2) Download and install the FREE version of Malwarebytes. Be sure to run the update.
3) Unplug from the internet and run a full Malwarebytes scan in Safe Mode.
4) If malware is found, let the program remove it, and at that point I would consider deleting your System Restore Points.
This is a very small "on demand" program that does not run in the background so it won't interfere with Norton. It is not a replacement for the full protection of NIS 2009.
Also check the event viewer (in start menu, type “event” it will show up). Expand “Windows Logs” from left, take a look at “Application” and “System”. Are there any suspicious errors related with your issue ?

Well last night after rebooting like 8 times in a row I finally got NIS 09 to install, update and run without crashing my machine. I thought life was great until this morning when I tried to turn my PC on and it wouldn’t boot… Basically had to boot with install disk to repair Windows…I am just about ready for a refund. As a customer I shouldn’t have to spend this much time and effort to get a product to work. I am going to chalk this up as another Vista Conflict. Symantecs customer service is a joke… Put a fork in me I am done…

Sometimes conflicts with drivers can cause freezes and crashes so this may be a conflict with a driver. I’m currently running NIS on clean Vista SP1 with no previous or beta version installed - no problems. If you have previously installed a beta build - that could be a problem…

I had virtually the same problem as you have had on one of our machines. None of the malware scanners found it. I downloaded a free copy of Vundo Fix here:
Ran it from the desktop, and it found files and deleted them. I installed a fresh copy of NIS 2009, and then it was perfect. It is perhaps worth a try?

Even if this error occurs only when NIS 2009 is installed, it still suggests a fundamental problem. Clearly, something is conflicting with NIS 2009 somehow. Have you any out-of-the-ordinary software installed? What do you see when you look at Event Viewer? Dr. Watson? I don’t know the Vista limitations, but I assume you can do a selective boot and see what happens when you block certain programs from loading at boot-up. I would want to find what is colliding with NIS 2009. In fact, I would consider it imperative on my own machine.
Good luck

I have a selective startup every time I boot my machine, just 4 or 5 proccess load. I do not have a bunch of clutter on my machine.I dont have any out-of-the-ordinary software loaded, I’ve done a thorough virus scan from safe mode so thats ruled out a virus. I personnally think its a conflict between Vista and Norton. Now that I have used the Norton software un-installer I can play games and use other software I have not been able to use or play in monthes…hmmmm. I currently have no protection and my machine seems to be running better then ever. Now that I think about it I’ve had nothing but problems with NIS 08 and now 09. Constant hard reboots evertime I use my machine. NIS 09 is just another program that conflicts with Vista I guess.
Thanks for every ones help…
Sorry about the rant
Have you tried not using the selective start-up and allow everything to load normally? Perhaps your keeping something necessaryfrom loading.

I concur with the previous poster that recommends you run Vista with it's factory configuration first, and once things are working, you can start to disable things you do not need or things you do not want to run.
Remember that we cannot possibly account for all permutations where users, even if with good intent, disable system services that our software may depend on, or even if we do not depend on them directly, that may cause secondary conflicts.
Please try with default Vista settings, i.e. a clean well known baseline, and let us know.
I installed NIS 2009 on two different computers this week. Both computers have been running 2008 with NO issues at all. Before installing 2009, I ran the norton removal tool. Then I installed 2009. Have not ran any previous 2009 versions. Both computers worked perfectly UNTIL they had been rebooted. Once they had been rebooted, on average at least 50% of the time, the computers would freeze up whenever I tried to do anything, such as go into start and go to control panel for instance. Both computers are running Windows vista premium with SP1 and are fully updated. I then ran the removal tool again, then re-installed 2008 on both computers again. Updated 2008 version, and once again, the computers run perfectly again. One of the computers is mine, one is my uncles. Go figure, but be realistic. 2009 did not go final release till earlier this week. And being that most people are on broadband internet now, how many people reboot or shutdown their computers anymore unless necessary? It was not necessary in my case, I just did it to see what would happen. I think Symantec needs to go back to the drawing board on this one and find out what’s going on. After all, it’s not just one person having this problem.
I would like to add my voice to those who have been having problems installing NIS2009, in the hope that Symantec may read and act on posts to this Forum.
I have been having the same problems as DPMGR40.
I installed NIS2009 following advice from chat help to solve a scan problem (the one which has endless references in this forum) with NIS2008. NIS2009 installed, updated and scanned but failed to restart after I rebooted the PC. I have removed NIS2009, run the removal tool, reinstalled and done most of everything else suggested on this forum. None of this has enabled NIS2009 to function. Another chat technician has intervened and repeated all that I have done but NIS2009 still failed to function after a reboot. In the blind hope that Symantec had released a patch to fix it, I tried the installation after a few days to see if there was any change - there wasn't.
This was on a Dell XPS420 running Vista Home Premium SP1 and the problems appeared following Microsoft's September download Tuesday. I also installed NIS2009 on my Lenovo laptop running XP Home, where it behaved correctly.
In order to stay protected I have returned to NIS2008 (the scan problem disappeared after a Live Update on Sept13th), and will stay with it until there is some evidence that NIS2009 has been mended. (To Blegs38552: My product registration and expiry date remains unchanged - as the chat technician said it would.)
I have since examined the various Windows logs and I can find no evidence that NIS2009 16.0.0.125 was ever installed. I can track the crashes, removal and reinstallation of both 15.0.0.60 and 15.5.0.23.
I notice that the posts reporting complaints seem to involve installations after the September MS Vista updates - do the satisfied posts relate to installations earlier than September 9th.
deluge - whenyou say that the product registration and expiry date remains unchanged, does this mean that your expiration date for 2008 is now roughly one year in the future?
I am commenting on Deluge’s query regarding windows updates, as I think he has something there. NIS 2009 worked perfectly on one Vista Ultimate 32 SP1 machine; on the other it worked for a day (according to my son), and then it would blue screen at the desktop. I ran the removal tool and reinstalled but no luck. I stepped back to September 9 (because that is what Vista Restore suggested), ran the removal tool to remove the NIS 2008 entries in the registry (from system restore), and installed NIS 2009. I then installed the September 9 windows updates (for vista and Office 2007), and the machine has been working perfectly these last two days.
