I have recently discovered a problem with Norton Internet Security 2009 in which the definition update timestamp (displayed on the main NIS screen) incorrectly logs the time of the last definition update.
For example, I open NIS and run LiveUpdate. New definitions are successfully installed, but the timestamp log indicates that my last update was hours ago.
So, I rebooted my system and tried again. All working okay, reboot did the job. But, the problem returned after a short time.
Hopefully, someone can look into this as it's very frustrating.
Please note, I have not altered my installation in any way.
Thanks,
Jen

When I click on the time link, it reports the last update was hours ago, even though LiveUpdate had just successfully downloaded and installed the latest updates.
Do you have any other security programs installed? What version of Windows are you running and service pack version? Could you also have a look in Event Viewer (start>settings>control panel>administrative tools) to see if there are ny errors. You might backtrack the time in event viewer to just before the stated time in Norton to see if there is an event listed. If you double click on the entries it will give you a bit more information. The entry might not show as an error but might just describe the ending of a specific utility.
My computer also updates easily and frequently, but somehow I rather suspect that the OP may not take a great deal of comfort in that fact. The OP would like to have the same reliability.
delphinium, No, no other security programs installed. I did have NIS 2008 installed, which came pre-installed on my system, but I used Norton Removal Tool to uninstall it. I've checked the App log and see nothing that would indicate a problem with NIS.
GrandPrixSC, If it's not a bug, then it must be normal behaviour? There are at least two people on this post (myself included) with this problem, so it's not an isolated issue.
Phil, Any time I try One Click Support, that particular window stops responding, which causes my system to stop responding (in that I cannot successfully restart of shut down).
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.
I am so frustrated with this issue, to the point where I've downloaded the latest Kaspersky Internet Security trial, with a view to trying that on my system. This is a drastic step for me as I have been using Norton protection since I bought my first PC back in 1998.
Thanks, Jen

If I may ask a question regarding the One Click Support. This features requires Flash Player to be installed, do you have the latest version of FlashPlayer? If you wish, you can check here. Not that FlashPlayer will correct the time stamp issue, but I'd like to see you be able to use the Once Click Support feature.
I am sure you are weary of answering all of our questions at this point, but we do have a sincere desire to help you.
Thanks for your understanding Phil, I've never had a problem with Norton products until NIS 2009 and that's part of the frustration.
To answer your question, yes, I have the latest version of Flash Player installed. I've had the One Click Support problem since the initial installation.
I'm going to throw a few more ideas at you unless you wish me to stop.
I note that you had NIS 2008 on your machine previously and that you used the Norton Removal Tool.
Please go into Add-Remove Programs and look for Live Update (or Symantec Live Update) and Live Update Notifier. These items were required for 2008 but are not needed for 2009. If you have no other Norton products, you may safely uninstall these items if they are present.
Could you check in start>search for Windows hotfix KB967715? That fix stopped my One Click Support. Froze it completely. I deleted it and rebooted. No problem with OCS since. If we can get that going, as Phil D suggests, it might solve the other problem.
