NIS 2009 error codes

Have Norton Internet security  2009 installed on XP SP3. Fresh install of OS and Norton 2009 day before. Did not have any problems with access. Can not access Norton Account (will not do anything), Quarantine - error 3040,40020, History - error 3040,40018, and View Home Network - error 3040,40016. They all work but not the next day. This from the desktop icon. Live update is working and so is the virus scan.

The NIS Error box states - [Norton Internet Security has encountered an internal program error. Error Code: 0x80004005]

Hi bj,

I'd like to ask a few questions to help in diagnosing this issue.

You mentioned a fresh install of OS and NIS 2009.

Was it a complete reformatting?

Did you apply Service Pack 3 and the Windows updates before or after you installed NIS?

Can you tell us which NIS 2009 version you are using?

In the main Norton interface > Help and Support > About. The current version is 16.1.0.33.

Do you have any other security software installed?

Thanks.

Yes on the reformat and do that on all my computers every December for about the last ten years. Three XP/SP3 and one Vista/SP1.

Installed SP3 before Norton; the SP3 is intergrated into the Xp installation; and window updates after all my programs were installed.

Using Norton v16.1.0.33 with current updates

Installed ZoneAlarm Pro (v 8.0.059.000) after Norton.

This is the same way I done all my computers except I would install Norton after Zonealarm.

The only thing I have to ignore in Norton is AntiSpyware and Smart Firewall. Everything else seems to work fine in Norotn and Zonealarm.

Hi bj,

There are known issues with Zone Alarm and various Norton Products. Merely turning off the Norton Smart Firewall will not prevent the conflict.

Performing a Forum search for Zone Alarm will yield numerous posts about this, but here is one that gives a good technical description. Although this post deals with NAV, the kernel level protection issue would be the same with NIS.

Thanks for the info.

Had went through the forums reading about the problems and did see this particular post.

Think I'll keep the config as of now. Just cannot access the mentioned links on Norton. Did like the way it was before. You get an Anti virus program and a separate program for a software firewall. I can keep an eye on Zonealarm as for as what program's trying to come in or go out and been using them for years together.

Hopfully one or both will come to a solution but not looking for that. Maybe this December I'll have to decide which one to use or not to use. Not worried about the money but since the computers are left on 24 hours; feel better with both running.

Thanks again

Just curious. Why would the links not work when they did for one day then not the next day and everything else works. Seem like it would be other way around? Like I said before; the live updates work, the scans and the settings all do what they suppose to do and can change all the configuratuions or am I not looking at this right?

It was probably due to a restart.

That will complete the process of any installation or update configuration changes.
