NIS 2009 Full System Scan - items skipped

Hi,

When running a full system scan, NIS 2009 reports that thousands of files have been skipped. I thought once the definitions were updated, these skipped files would be rescaned. Can someone please clarify why files are skipped from my full system scans.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

Hi Tom,

38 per cent trusted, 62 per cent needed

Thanks,

Jen

Hi miss_fugg,

In your case the number of trusted files if around just 32%, which means Norton skips those 32% of files that are trusted in your computer. By the way, that brings me to another question. How did you find out that Norton is skipping files.

1. Do you see a massive jump in the numbers of files scanned in the scanning progress window, which triggers this question?

2. Do you see some numbers in the skipped files, when you click on the  "total items scanned" section in the Results summary tab?

Thanks,

Hi Tom,

Yes, I see that files are missed from scanning when I check the "total items scanned" section in the Results summary tab.

Thanks,

Jen

It may be possible that u got infected by some Malware specificaly designed to target symantec products.

Download Malwarebytes from net and update it and run it.

It sud remove that malware.

Hi Jen,

Looks like those are the whitelisted files that Norton has trusted in your computer. They won't be scanned by your Norton program because Norton already knows that they are safe to exist. This is a recent enhancement that we have done to our Norton program where the Norton Insight feature checks for the known good files that are resident in your computer, and then decides whether to scan them or not depending upon the trust value.

Before we can all assume that you are safe, can you confirm if your computer is updated with the latest Virus Definitions and you have Green check mark with a status message "Secure".

Another thing that we can do to confirm if it is a scan failure or Whitelist exclusions is by performing the following steps.

1. Click Computer Settings

2. Set the Scan Performance Profiles to "Full Trust"

3. Run a Quick Scan or Full system scan

Let us know if there are any files that get skipped.

Thanks,

TomV

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Tom, I have the latest definitions and NIS reports a status of Secure (with green tick).

I have changed my scan profile to "Full Scan" and now NIS doesn't skip any files when performing a full system scan.

Thanks for all your help,

Jen
