Hi. This is my first time at the forums, and searching resulted in a lot relating to NIS & the Google Toolbar. But I’m surprised I didn’t see anything related to my particular situation.
I installed NIS 2009 (my first Norton in years) to my Windows XP Home SP2 PC, and all went smoothly. But when I got into IE6, my recently-updated Google Toolbar was gone! The NIS bar was there.
I assumed I would just go to IE customization and find that the checkmark to show the Google Toolbar would be gone, and then simply re-check it. But nope, there was no option for the Google Toolbar there any more. Vanished. Interestingly, it still showed in Add/Remove programs. So I uninstalled it (feels strange uninstalling something that’s not there anymore…), reinstalled it, reset my Google Toolbar options, and re-arranged the now-jumbled IE toolbars to my liking.
I assumed this must have been a unique, one-time aberration.
But then I went to install NIS 2009 on my other pc, which also had a recently-downloaded Google Toolbar. But no, the NIS installation killed that one too! And again, it was still listed in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. This time the removal caused my pc to lock up (the Add/Remove dialog would not go away, and it still listed the Google toolbar). I couldn’t close Add/Remove, so I tried just restarting the pc. But it told me NIS wouldn’t respond. I gave it some time, still no response, so I tried killing one of the ccSVCHost entires in Task Manager. (I may have those last two sentences reversed in time sequence…I forget.) Anyway, just as I was about to power off “hard” with the off button, it rebooted. When it came back up the Google Toolbar was indeed uninstalled (interestingly this time it had deleted the Google Updater service in Services, whereas I had noted that that had been leftover after my first pc’s “Phantom Google Toolbar” uninstallation). I reinstalled it as with the other PC…
No issues with Firefox, although there I just use the default Google search box, not the toolbar.
If this happened to me on two different pc’s I can’t imagine I’m the only one! Anyone else have the same experience? Symantec folks, any idea why this would happen?
Thanks.
