NIS 2009. Is it blocking pop3 emails in Outlook Express?

Hi,

Just yesterday 8/4/09, I upgraded from NIS 2008 to 2009. Had problems installing but finally got it sorted. Since then, I cannot get down my ISP emails (Blueyonder.co.uk). Googlemail and Hotmail come down no problem. I have treble checked the account info with the site and all is the same. The only thing between blueyonder mail and Googlemail is the pop3  and smtp ports. Googlemail smtp is 465 pop3 is 995. Blueyonder smtp is 25 pop3 is 110. Before installing NIS 2009 I could get the blueyonder mail down. I copied down a previous ghost image to a spare drive just to simply discover where the problem might lie. I did not have NIS on this one and I downloaded emails without any problem. The only difference is NIS 2009. Could NIS be blocking these ports? If so, how do I check and rectify?

When it fails I get this error:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Blueyonder account. The connection to the server has failed.

Server: 'pop3.blueyonder.co.uk'
Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10061

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2.

I would appreciate any help to solve this problem.

David

Hi CoolDude64 -

GMail and Hotmail are HTTP based, not POP3, so there would not be problem and it isn't.

You mentioned that you have some sort of installation problem with NIS 2009.

Additionally, you are running XP with SP2, not the latest SP3. However, this should not be a problem.

Therefore, I suggest the following:

Remove NIS 2009 using the Norton Removal Tool HERE. Run it and reboot- run it again and reboot a second time.

Check the function of your pop3 e-mail client, both inbound and outbound.

IF OK, install the latest NIS 2009 from this LINK - note that you will need your Orginal Product Key.

Please let me know how you do.

Cheers. :smileyhappy:

If not to late you could get LSPfix from here and post a screen shot of what it finds.  This would give us an idea of the Winsock / network layer’s condition.

I do not wish to correct you but Gmail IS POP3, see attachment.

That is why I posted the ports it uses and it works ok.. I am not on SP3 for the simple reason every time I go to install it it fails to install. I do not see why I need to uninstall NIS as everything works ok. Added to that Norton Removal Tool says it will remove ALL Norton products, and as I have a few it really is not viable. All I want to know is where can I look on NIS to see if these ports are blocked.

Therfore, for the time being I shall download that file and get a screenshot and repost the contents as suggested by the other contributor. Nevertheless, thank you both for your advice, I shall repost with the findings.

Something I have just noted. Under Smart Firewall, Program Control, there are no programs in it. I even tried to add Outlook Express but it still says no programs there. So maybe I will have to uninstall but I do not want to remove ALL my Norton programs. Is there another way?

Another thing, if gmail and hotmail come down in Outlook Express  why won't my blueyonder ?

Is this any help?

Hi CoolDude64

you might want to edit out your email address!

Hi CoolDude64,

Have you made any changes in general to the NIS options? Can you please try the following to at least see if programs will start showing up in the "Smart Firewall-->Program Control" list:

1. In the main NIS Settings page, click "Default All"-->"Yes" to reset all NIS settings back to default state

2. Go to Smart Firewall-->Advanced Settings-->Configure-->Firewall Reset-->Reset [+]-->Yes

3. Close out of the Settings

4. Launch your browser and ensure you have network access

5. Go back into Settings-->Smart Firewall-->Program Control-->Configure and see if your browser is present, you can also try rebooting and do the same check for other apps to appear

Once done, please also check if you can still reproduce the Blueyonder email issue and post back. If the problem is still there we'll take another look but I want to make sure the firewall is working correctly first.

Thanks!

Matt

Thanks to Tim Lopez for doing what I should have  done and blocked out my email address.

Matt,

Did as you suggested but no programs in Program Control. Email still the same. It just seems strange that Gmail downloads ok being a POP3 but my blueyonder doesn't.

Anyway, over to you for the next thing we can try. Thanks so very much for your help so far, it is much appreciated.

 Hi CoolDude64,

We have 2 options at this point:

1. If you're interested in finding out the root problem to both issues, gathering logs may help us figure this out. Please follow the instructions here to obtain logs.

-Enable logging

-Reboot

-Reproduce the issues you are experiencing (i.e. generate the email issue and also run a few network applications such as your browser, try ping in a command prompt, file share etc..)

-Please private message me the logs

2. Try a simple uninstall of NIS 2009 via Add/Remove programs and then reinstall to see if the issues still occur. Perhaps something went wrong in the firewall configuration early on. If you do this, I'd still recommend you follow option 1 first just so we can see what the issue was in case option 2 resolves it.

Thanks!

Matt

Hi CoolDude64,

I just realized you aren't able to send files via private message so I'll private message you shortly and provide directions on how to send me the logs (if you decide on that option).

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Sorry I haven't replied, I have been busy, but now all is done. I shall go the  route you suggested and get the logs. Alll I need to know now is how to send you the logs.

Hi Matt,

Downloaded SymNRA and extracted as requested. Run the program and asks to accept licence which I did. I then get this message: UHOH.jpg

This happens everytime I run the program, it asks to accept licence then this screen appears. 5 times so far, so waiting on your ideas on what to do next.

Hi CoolDude64 -

Just wanted to corrrect my earier post.

Google and now Hotmail are POP3 and HTTP enabled.

You might wish to try my procedure for the clean uninstall and reinstall.

Please keep us posted on your progress with Symantec.

Thanks. :smileyindifferent:

Hi Compumind,

I would do that but when I tried to run the program it gave the message Norton Removal Tool WILL remove ALL Norton products. I have several Norton products so don't wish to re-install all of them. Is there another way or have I got the wrong end of the stick about the Norton Removal Tool?

David

Hi -

This is true. The NRT will remove the other applications listed under that link.

The only other way that I know of, is to uninstall it via add/remove programs.

:smileyindifferent:

I would recommend waiting for Mattp’s response to this problem.  I’m sure he will be back to you Monday or Tuesday depending on the holiday.

Hi CoolDude64,

I will definitely get back to you sometime today as I need to research this new issue.

Thanks!

Matt

Hi CoolDude64,

I just private messaged you some more instructions.

Thanks!

Matt

Hi Matt -

Would it be possible to make the solution public?

TIA :smileyindifferent:

Hi Compumind,

Right now I'm just trying to troubleshoot the issue CoolDude64 is seeing regarding SymNRA and I've requested he send the SymNRA log file. If and when we figure out a solution to any of these issues I'll definitely reply so others may benefit.

Thanks!

Matt
