NIS 2009 Live Update fails

I used Live Update on my NIS 2009 installation, and repeatedly get the error “NIS Engine - Norton 2009 Product Update - Status: Failed to complete”.  I used the one-click tech support link and followed its advice including downloading and run coRstLUZ.exe.  But the update still fails, and now the one-click tech support link merely freezes (no help at all).  These problems persist after reboot after reboot.

1.  How do I get NIS updated?

2.  How do I restore its normal operation, short of uninstalling and reinstalling, which is no answer?
