I went to the Symantec.com web site a few minutes ago and it had a banner telling me that a new version of my software (NIS 2009) is available. Finally, I said to myself.
I downloaded and ran the setup.exe program (after creating a system restore point, of course). Restarted when prompted and started NIS. Checked the version - was 16.5.0.135. I tried to run Live Update to see if I would get a new version - after a few minutes, the Live Update box gave me a message that said "unable to connect to the Live Update server. Please check your internet connection". The fact that I am writing this should tell you that my internet connection is fine.
Clicked on more info - got a dialogue box with the same message and a link that says : "click here to go to Norton Technical Support Base".
Clicked on link - received a screen in my browser that said:

I don't mind waiting for the upgrade if that is what it takes to assure that I get a functional patch, but putting me through all of this only to end up with a useless installation is not a good thing.
I had decided not to do anything more until I saw some on Norton's web site telling me that I can update. I guess this is not a good idea. I guess I should wait until the forum says that it is definitely out there. In the mean time, someone should get rid of that banner message before more people start reacting to it, and without creating a restore point first.
Time for me to run system restore (again!).
