i needed to reinstall xp, so i have a clean machine with sp3 and all of the patches. no malware or viruses. i tried to install nis 2009 and it fails...in the middle of starting services it just reboots instantly and then tells me it's uploading error files. also, at this point, while i'm connected to my home network just fine, i can't get to the internet. uninstalling nis fixes that, and i can get on the internet fine. i've tried installing norton 360, and nis 2010 (downloaded the latest file) and none of them can finish the install.
there are no active antivirus programs on the machine. i use vipre, but it's in manual mode and doesn't scan automatically. plus, i've turned it off completely when installing norton and it had no effect.
i've used the latest norton removal tool and then tried to install again, no luck.
i have another machine that i removed nis2009 with an expired subscription, and am having the same issues on it when i try to install. so a clean machine with nothing much beyond ms office installed on it, and a 'crowded' machine with lots installed, and i can't get nis 2009, or nis2010 to install.
