I upgraded from NIS 2008 to NIS 2009 a couple of weeks ago. I am running XP SP3. NIS works fine under users with administrator privilages but will not start under restricted users. It also will not start if you try to "run as" administrator. Somtimes it complains about privilages. Sometime it says nothing but does not start. (depends on the PC and user). I talked to support about this back then and after several technicians and several hours all they could say was this was a known problem. I do not see this anywhere in this forum. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Tech it is not SP3 related. It is LUA related. SP3 was out long before NIS 2009 was out. Symantec was aware of SP3 before releasing NIS 2009. I have not seen any problems fixed by uninstalling SP3.

I was wondering if anybody (there must be somebody) who is running NIS 2009 on XP Pro with LUAs. If it works for some and not me the problem must be in the registry. I found a Symantec registry cleaner with suggestions that it would cure some other problems with SP3.
Thats me. I installed NIS09 through my Guest/Restricted Account via Run As command. In other words, I was on a restriced account but I often elevate the privilages of certian applications. Everything has been fine. I almost never use my Admin account and do everything with Guest: LiveUpdate, scans, malware disinfection, etc.

Norton Systemworks has a registry cleaner -- it's part of its WinDoctor program. A medium aggressive cleaner that seems to have become slightly more aggressive in the new version 12.
I was able to install under a restricted account with run as but it still will not run under that account. Runs only on accounts that have admin priv. I can give any user admin priv and then it will start.

Well I have Windows XP SP3 and installed NIS09 under my guest account using elevated priv, and everything has been perfect. No Kidding. Your best shot would be the registry cleaner; then you could try a reinstall.
i ran the symantec tool and it found nothing. I ran a commercial reg cleaner that cleaned up about 1000 items but NIS still will not start under restricted users. I hope someone has a bright idea. There is some file or directory that does not have the correct priv but i have no idea on how to find it. It seems like Symantec doesn’t either, at least the ones in Bangalor.
I am sorry I did not see the last reply until just now.
First I'ld like to propose a slight change to the procedure. I propose to remove NIS first before I edit the registry. Do you see any problem with that?
And second, I do not understand what you want me to do in the steps before the regedit. Could you please explain what you want me to do a little.
Sorry for not clarifying. Please uninstall NIS via the Add/Remove Program first. Then, run the Norton Removal Tool: Symantec.com/nrt. After those steps... Delete: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Symantec Temp. Files Also, delete “Symantec”, “Norton”, “Norton Installer”. Then, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users Delete the same files you did in the “Administrator” account Do the same for all the users you see in your “Documents and Settings” folder.
thanks for the clarification. I checked for all these directories. None of them exist. And I have NOT removes NIS 2009 yet. Does this change your advise any?
i removed NIS 2009 using the uninstall that came with the product. Then I removed it using download from symantec. Then I removed the registry entries noted above. Then I installed NIS under a restricted UID. It asked for admin password and installed as administrator. Nothing changed. It will not start under a restricted account. It runs fine under all accounts with admin priv. You cannot "run as" administrator under a restricted UID. Get priv violation on ..../uistub.exe.
I repeated this whole process and in addition removed SP3 after the 2 removal steps and regedits. Same result. I am convinced it is a NIS bug. There is something about the way my 2 machines are configured. I know I they are not "normal" because I share a SCSI drive that is physically in a tower (XP PRO) on the wireless LAN and I use the "make available offline" option to keep this drive synchronized on all PCs on the LAN.
