Hi,
For two years I've been using NIS 2007, but about 2 weeks ago I started having Windos XP' blue screens of death, and it killed about a week of my work's time. I could not relate it to literally system change or software installation, and it took me a while to narrow the possibilities down to NIS, so I removed it and bought a new version, that is NIS 2009. The blue screens were no longer a problem, but then something really weird happend after only two days of using NIS 2009 - after one of system restarts it removed itself, offerring nothing in return ;(
I thought it maybe was an unpleasant exception (consider this happening when I've had no installation disk on me, on a business trip for example...). So I reinstalled the software (both with Windows tools as well as newest Norton Removal Tool), and it happend again, and again... After some more wasted hours I seem to have found a consistency: after installation the first live update finds about 23MB of updates, and this brings the subscriptions up to date; then the second live update I try to run finds some 4 items of about 11,5MB total, and having done that means that the very next system restart NIS 2009 will be getting rid of itself. It says that it appearently has found some new product and it must remove the existing one, but only the removal part takes place. These 4 items are:
- Norton 2009 Streaming Virus Definitions
- NIS resources (requires rebooting)
- NIS engine (requires rebooting)
- NIS resources (requires rebooting)
Much as I can restrain myself from clicking the live update, I'm not happy with this, especially because it becomes a threat to my notebook rather than protection.
What could be the reason?
My system: Windows XP Profession SP3, 2 cores, 4GB ram, pretty standard stuff.
What I've already tried:
- removing the product with the NRT
- installing from my CD as well as network trial
- installing in non standard location
Oh, and by the way, every time I install the software, the installation process is unable to locate SymIM.sys driver, so I have to point to it.
I must say for the first time ever I'm very disappointed with Norton product, and really hope someone from NIS team will solve the problem, because I've already wasted more money worth of time than all the products of Symantec I've ever purchased put together. Not giving up the product yet, but pretty close to it... ;(
Best regards,
ryba
