NIS 2009 Scans Less Files than NIS 2008...Why?

I have just updated from NIS 2008 to NIS 2009. Now with NIS 2009 the full sustem scan, scans only 324,000 files.  With NIS 2008, it scanned(on my pc), around 800,000.

Why this is happening?

It does not give the same Safe feeling I have had with NIS 2008/

Hi

Could be because NIS 2009 does not scan the "System Volume Infomation" folder. Which has all the System Restore Points" inside, which can become large.

NIS / NAV 2009 places the folder in the "Scan Exclusions" list by default.

Quads

Hi Quads,

Thanks for your answer.  Did NIS 2008 scan the "System Volume Information" folder?  I dont think it did.

Hi

Don't know I never had NIS 2008, but some programs do scan the SVI folder some don't by default. That includes the change from one year version to another.

Quads

The default scan exclusions in NIS 2008 was to not scan the System Volume Information folder.

In your NIS 2009 Scan settings do you have:

Compressed Files Scan:  ON

Rootkits and Stealth Items Scan:  ON

Tracking Cookies:  ON  (except for this current temporary problem)

Microsoft Office Automatic Scan:  ON  (if you have Office)

Hi silicoman01,

The settings are as follows:

Compressed Files Scan:  ON

Rootkits and Stealth Items Scan:  ON

Tracking Cookies: IGNORE  (due to this current temporary problem)..as you can see I posted a message in the respective thread...

Microsoft Office Automatic Scan:OFF (if you have Office).

Is it possible that because of the setting :

Scan Performance Profile:  (is set to:) Standard Trust,   I get such a huge difference in file counting?

Thanks alot.

I doubt if it makes such a huge difference.  You could set it to Full Scan and run a full system scan as a check.  I have Scan Performance Profiles set to Standard Trust as well.  I'll try it on Full Scan on my system and see too.

On my Vista SP1 Business system, the difference between Full Scan and Standard Trust is only 49 files. :smileyhappy:

Hi TrDo.......

NIS 2009 has a special feature called NORTON INSIGHT which identifies files trusted by NORTON or Community.

This feautre ,after identifying trusted files , skips them from being scanned everytime , which increases

the scanning speed and hence the performance of the computer.

Since you have scan performance profile set to Standard Trust , NIS09 is  omitting the files that are trusted.

It scans only those flies which are not trusted or some trusted files which you modified.

Hence less number of files are scanned.

However you can get all of them scanned  by changing  scan performance profile to Full Scan and removing

System Volume Information folder from scan exclusions .

Yeah can't understand why you want Norton to work longer and scan all 800,000 files =/.

Your safe. That's for sure.

Couldn't have said it better. That's it

OK guys.  Thank you all very much.  I got it now. Here is the situation on my part:

With Trusted Setting on-----324,000 files.  Without Trusted Setting (i.e. Full mode )-----900,000 files were examined.  Much longer though.

Reply to Tech0utsider: You know, when for the past 10 months you see NIS 08 scanning 800,000 files, and suddenly last night after installing NIS 2009 you see 324,000 files, the feeling is not so good.  Not to to mention the fact, that there is an issue with NIS 09 and the cceraser.dll, which crashes the win32.exe (there is a thread about this problem, started last night actually).

The combination of these two things gave me the impression that maybe I did something wrong during the installation process.  Its a pchycological issue this antivirus concept, I'm sure you all know that.

In any case, the Number of files issue seems to be solved...Lets see about the crash now....

Shidhar/Stu   and everyone else involved, I would like to thank you very much.
