I'm running Vista SP1 Business on a Dell XPS410 with 4 gbytes RAM, 2.66 ghertz Intel dual core processor, and WD Raptor 10000 rpm Sata disks.
On system reboot, NIS 2009 significantly slows down the opening of Vista Sidebar. It takes up to 1 minute longer for the Sidebar to open. This problem existed with NIS 2008 and now is also occurring with NIS 2009. Frequently the Sidebar does not fully load on system reboot. I have to close Windows Sidebar and then restart it. If I take NIS off the computer, the Sidebar opens up promptly on system reboot.
Neither Avira Premium Security Suite or Kaspersky 2009 cause any delay with the Vista Sidebar opening (and, No, I do not have these security suites running or installed on the same system as NIS 2009).
I have 6 gadgets in the sidebar. They are: XM Online Radio, Top Processes, Wired Network Meter, System Monitor, App Launcher, and System Control. I do not have the Norton gadget set to open on the Sidebar. However, the problem also exists if I do have the Norton gadget set to open.
I can get around this problem by having Vista Sidebar start up via the Task Scheduler with a 15 second delay. However, the NIS gadget definitely is not playing well with Vista Sidebar on system reboot.
PieterV,
Thanks very much for your attention to my post.
The Windows Sidebar problem occurs with and without the NIS gadget in the Sidebar.
I had to remove NIS 2009 from my Vista SP1 Business computer this morning after submitting this post. In addition to the Windows Sidebar problem, I encountered additional problems. So I switched back to Avira Premium Security Suite because my Vista SP1 system is my primary computer and needs to work properly...as much as possible. Other problems encountered with NIS 2009 installed were:
- Outlook 2007 randomly stopped responding. I could not send emails some of the time.
- My full system backup program Casper V5.0.1310 would not copy to my backup disk with NIS 2009 installed.
I recognize that this does not help resolve issues with the newly released NIS 2009, but I need my Vista SP1 Business computer running reliably.
I am having the same problem on two PC's running Windows Vista Ultimate. Either the sidebar never loads, or if it does, the response time at boot-up is extremely slow. I am running the standard gadgets in addition to the one with NIS2009.
Jimbo40,
Hopefully you can work with Symantec and resolve this long standing Sidebar issue (was occurring in NIS 2008). I feel confident that other NIS users with Vista are experiencing it as well...perhaps not recognizing that it is NIS causing the problem. I can't use NIS 2009 until the Casper/NIS 2009 conflict is resolved.
Hi Jimbo40, since siliconman01 is unable to help us research the issue, would you be willing to try my suggestions as originally asked from siliconman01?
--------------------------------
From your post it is not clear if the slowdown is caused by the NIS gadget, or one or more of the other gadgets you use in combination with NIS, or the sidebar itself.
To help us diagnose, please try various combinations of gadgets;
With and without the NIS gadget.
With only the NIS gadget.
With only original Microsoft gadgets, say the clock and the CPU meter.
It would also help to eliminate interference if you could disable any other software that runs automatically during login.

You also mention that this is an issue also present in NIS 2008, can you please point us to posts where this is discussed, we would like to gather information from those users as well?
Pieter
I was having the same issue as soon as I installed NIS 2009. What I noticed was the Windows Defender Icon displayed in the Notification area. This Icon waas not present when I was runnign NIS 2008. I turned off WindowsDefender and rebooted and the issue with the SideBar stopped. IMO there seems to be a conflct between NIS 2009 and Windows Defender. My question is: Does Windows Defender need to be running if I am using NIS 2009?
I believe it was said elsewhere that we should NOT use Windows Defender with NIS 2009.
The problem is sporadic and does not happen all the time. I am also experiencing constant freezes when my pc boots up. I've had to do over a dozen hard resets as well.
I first installed NIS2009 over NIS2008. After these problems started, I totally removed it, ran the removal tool and reinstalled 2009.
What's the next step in troubleshooting? The only other product I have running at startup is Dell Automated PC TuneUP.
Laptop is an XPS M1710 and the desktop is an XPS 720.
Let me try to respond to a few of the questions and tackle some of the issues here:
1) Windows Defender should be turned OFF automatically after installing NIS 2009.
2) For the hard freezes, when it does happen, is it consistently at the same spot during bootup? Ie: before the Norton icon shows in the tray, when you open the UI, etc...
a) Configure your computer to enable manual crash and for a full dump: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244139 . Follow the steps and reboot.
b) Next time you run into a hard freeze, hold down the right ctrl key, then press the scroll lock key twice. Your system should blue screen and it should dump the contents of memory to disk. Be patient as it'll take awhile.
c) Once it is done, reboot back into Windows and browse to the .dmp file. It should be in your %Windows% folder, called MEMORY.DMP.
d) This file will be huge depending on how much memory you have. ZIP/RAR it up and then contact us, we will provide you with instructions on where to put the file.
Note: Since the dump file is so large, you will be committing your internet connection for a long time! Let us know if you are ok with this.
Thanks,
/Chester
As for the Sidebar issue, we'll have to narrow down the issue. Can those of you running into the problem try disabling each NIS feature and see if that resolves the problem? I am specifically looking to see if these features are affecting it from loading:
1) Firewall
2) Advanced Protection / SONAR
3) AutoProtect
4) Intrusion Prevention
5) Norton Product Tamper Protection.
It may taken some time/effort to narrow this down and we appreciate any information that we can gather on this.
Thank you,
/Chester
This may be a quirk of my system but I had this problem on my Vista 64 bit setup and seem to have resolved it for me anyway.
I removed all the gadgets one by one from the side bar and re-booted, my pc started ok I then added the calender, weather and Clock gadgets, re-booted and all was ok.
I then added the norton 09 gadget and re-booted my system and it has been fine for 2 days now and have shutdown and re-started several times in that period with no problems.
Have not tried re-arranging gadgets as "if it ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind" but my Norton Gadget is the bottom one do not know if this is significant.
Hi Chester,
I am having the same issues on my pcs. I have just installed NIS09 on my two pc's one running vista business, the other running vista ultimate.
Both of them have significantly slowed since. The sidebar constantly stops responding.
I have switched off the Norton gadget which has allowed my sidebar to startup, however some of my gadgets (that require internet connectivity) no longer update and connect to the internet.
Any suggestions?
Josh
83poolie,
Your problem sounds more intent than just a Vista sidebar issue.
You state that you just installed NIS 2009-
1. Was this an upgrade from a previous version of NIS? If so, did you run the Norton Removal Tool to fully uninstall the previous version prior to your upgrade?
2. What other security programs are you running?
3. If you removed a competitive security program prior to installing NIS 2009, did you fully uninstall the competitor program? Many of them have special removal tools to fully uninstall them.
4. Is Windows Defender turned off? It should be turned off when running NIS 2009.
5. Are your Vista systems upgraded to SP1?
I run Vista SP1 Business with UAC enabled. The Norton UAC makes it very easy to run with UAC enabled on Vista.
Turning off UAC in Vista also turns off IE7 Protected Mode which is not good.
One change that I have made on my system concerning the Vista Sidebar is that I have it set up in the Task Scheduler to be started on a 15 second delay on computer startup. This lets the system settle down a bit before the sidebar is activated and helps in letting it's gadgets access their needed info more quickly....because of the specific gadgets I use in the sidebar...including the NIS gadget.
Hi siliconman01
Sorry to hear about your sidebar issues.
