NIS 2009 slow to launch program control window

Update my version of NIS2008 online, and I'm noticing that program control is slow to prompt me to allow programs...

When I start a program it will just sit there, and no program control window pops up until at time almost 5 minutes as passed.

I've gradually been able to get most programs recognized by NIS2009 ... but I'm wondering what would cause this action?

Is there a setting that I'm not seeing that would delay NIS2009 from prompting me for program control?

Thanks,

Les

Can I assume you are running Vista? It may be worth posting your operating system in as much detail as possible.

I suggest you should defragment your disk and clean up any temporary files (use Windows Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup for this purpose). Also be sure that you don’t have a second firewall and antivirus program installed. You can turn off Windows Firewall too, providing that you use NIS (not NAV). If you have a spyware program installed that’s running in the backgroung, it would be better if you turn off it’s real time protection (to increase performance), and just use the manual scan feature.

On his other thread you will notice the poster is running Ghost.  No info on version.  May have an impact.

Operating system is Windows XP with Service pack 3

I have Ghost installed version 10, but it is not running in the system tray, I do manual archives with the Ghost.

I will run windows defrag

I will rund window clean up utility

I also have CCleaner installed and run that often. latest version

I have AdAware 2009 installed, but only rund that manually has well, it is not resident in my system tray.

I like to keep my system tray minimalistic  :)

Update...So far today my system seems more stable since NIS 2009 has now configured most of the programs I noramlly access.

Took a few day but NIS 2009 now seem to be more responsive, and my system is no longer locking up.   On a couple programs that I "Allow this time" I still see a definite delay in the window popping up to make me choose.  Do'nt know why this is, never had this delay with NIS 2008 the control window would launch quickly.

This is still an issue, definitely happens especially when Firefox gets an update, or I choose to allow a program "this time"

Apparently I must have a bad install, since I received a few error messages when I downloaded NIS 2009, and did the install over NIS 2008.   I am going too purchase a new version shortly since my subscription runs out in a month...now my question, should I dump my old version of Ghost, and just install Norton 360 in place of Ghost & NIS ?

Les

It’s a balancing act.  You may not like the “set and forget” of 360 if you like to tinker, but you will have an updated version of Ghost. It is going to depend on what is most important to you.  There have been problems with old Nvidia drivers and Ghost, so make sure drivers are updated.

So 360 doesn't allow has much in the way of customization is that what you mean about Tinkering ?

It's not possible with 360 to do some manual settings?

Thanks,

Les

You can run backup manually and turn off automatic backup, however, Norton 360 is less customizable and provides basic backup options and Norton Ghost is an advanced backup solution. For example, with Norton 360 you cannot backup your entire system (create disk image). Norton 360 provides file and folder backup only, and you can backup to a secure online storage - standart edition includes 2 GB of secured online storage, premier edition - 10 GB, with option to purchase more.

Final update on this problem

Time for my subscription renewal went to uninstall NIS2009 using Add/Remove programs, uninstall errored out... "missing files!!!"

This confirmed my initial assumption that the online upgrade from NIS2008 to NIS2009 was corrupt.

I then ran the RemovalTool, and cleaned out all the old Symantec/Norton files, and did a clean install of NIS2009 from disc....and now the program control window launches immediately...no delay, or hang-ups and NIS2009 is working as it should.

Installed my Ghost V10 ... no problems or error messages...

Glad to see everything worked out for you, and that you have what you want in your system.
