I just bought a new desktop with NIS 2009 preloaded. The past couple days gmail has run really slowly. I did research and found issues for NIS before 2009. I am not using a Norton toolbar on Firefox as far as I know and hence I couldn't find any answers for my specific situation. Please advise.
Try to configure the program rules in firewall for Firefox:
1. Start Norton Internet Security. 2. In the Internet section, click Settings. 3. Under Smart Firewall, click Configure next to Program Control. 4. In the Program Column, check whether the firefox.exe is listed there and change the Access from Block or Custom to Allow. (If there is no entry listed for firefox, click Add, find that file from C:\Program Files\Mozilla, select it and click Open. Then set the access to Allow)
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Click OK.
Check the connectivity after this and post the result
I turned the Smart Firewall back on and did what you said. Firefox was listed as Auto, so I switched it to Allow.
My gmail is resposive like before. However, I am still having problems with my TD Ameritrade account being slowish and delayed. Could this be related to NIS?
Try to remove the firefox entry from Program Rules and then add it again (Steps are in previous post). Then run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you get message “No more updates…”. Restart the computer and then check the connectivity through firefox.

I did as you instructed but now that I have checked gmail further via composing a mesg, the responsiveness is very slow again. To summarize my current status:
Smart Firewall - On with Program Control - Firefox set to Allow.
I ran LiveUpdate a few times till it said: No more updates.
I rebooted the computer.
Also, I just tried turning off the Smart Firewall again but still a very slow response
Since this is a new machine, have you also just installed Firefox, and if so what version is it? This link will provide you with several suggestions that will speed up FF.
Also, you don't mention how you connect to the internet. If you connect via a NAT router, it also has a firewall, and settings may need to be tweaked in there.
That Skype plug in seems to conflict with a lot of things. There are two confirmed instances reported here and here in the Norton Forums where it was found to cause Norton Safe Web’s search results page markup not to work. The Gmail issue seems pretty well documented as well at Mozilla.
