NIS 2009 Will Not Open Smart Firewall

When I reboot my computer, Smart Firewall in NIS 2009 is disabled. I’ve run the Norton Removal Tool and reinstalled but when i reboot it shows Smart Firewall disabled again. Please help.

Can you click on Help and Support and then click on One Click Support and let us know what is happening?

Do you have any other security programs installed in your computer?

Click Start> Run> In the Run dialogue box, type services.msc> Click Ok.

This will open the services window. Find out Norton Internet Security service and check its status. It should be started and Automatic. If not, please change it to Automatic and started.

Do you have any other Security programs(AntiSpyware/Firewall) installed in your computer?

What happens when you try to turn on the Smart Firewall, ie. click on the slider near Smart Firewall?

Smart Firewall got disabled immediately after you install NIS 2009 for the first time?

I have the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop runnin XP SP3.  Using the Norton uninstall tool and reinstalling it cured it for a day and then the message "Smart Firewall failed to load. Error Code 0x80040300" but can't find this code in the support  database.

When I try to turn on the firewall (by clicking the on/off vutton) it starts the One Click Support and tells me to use the uninstall tool again.

Norton Internet Security service is set to automatic.

Any ideas?

Greenisaac,

If possible, can you post the screenshot of that error message from firewall?

Close the Norton program. Right-click Norton Internet Security service and then select Restart. Restart the computer and then try to enable the firewall.

Error Message

Thanks.  Here it is.

Restarting the service got the firewall running again but when the computer was rebooted it went back to the firewall being disabled again.

Did you search that error code in this site? Copy and paste it into the search bar on the top right. Also are you using any other security products?

I've done the search and came up with nothing and I've got no other security programs running.

Cheers.

When re-enabling the service, make sure it’s set to start “Automatic” and not “Manual” or “Disabled”, and see if that fixes it for you.

Yes, it is all set up for Automatic but the firewall still can't start up.

Ok i've got the same problem with smart firewall and i also noticed an issue before that where my computer has been getting lagged every 5 seconds, runs progams incredibly slowly and the processes tab in the task manager sometimes lists system idle as being 99, but at the bottom in the frame, it lists something like 50% or more. It lags most noticeably when running video or audio. I have tried to system restore my computer to no affect because whatever the restore point i use, it says that it failed and that nothing has been changed. Incidentally i can't find a recovery disc when i look in my computer. I shouldv noticed this beforehand but im not sure whether i had one, but im assuming that i should. Its a compaq presario b1800. also, i tried the Run-> services.msc and that didnt work. It says that access is denied. I'm on the only account on the laptop...

Would appreciate any sort of help!

Hi All,

I have been having the same problem with 2009 Smart? Firewall error messages when I boot up. I up graded to 2009 a month ago after giving in to the Norton popup wundow urging me to do so. I had been reluctant to upgrade because I felt I should leave well enough alone. I should have listned to my gut.

After upgrading to 2009 It ran great for about a week. Thenit did not run Smart firewall on boot up. I followed the prompts to uninstall and reinstall Norton. It ran fine....for two days. Next time this happened I just rebooted without the uninstall and reinstall procedure. It opened ok....for three days.

Next time it happened I uninstalled and reinstalled, and as before it was ok for a few days.

Next time it happened I called support. They said they never heard of that problem before. She must have started working there that morning! She was very nice and helpfull. All she could offer was to uninstall and reinstall back to an earlier version.

That was a day ago and it seems fine. I don't expect to have a problem with the earlier version, never had before.

I have a basic, stock Compaq Presario PC running xp. I haven't had problems with any other software but this one. I hope Norton can fix this glitch before I renew. I've used Norton for years, but will not stick with them if I can't use their latest product.

Best of luck to all of you. Let me know if you get a fix for this...

Thanks,

Sid

Are you using any other security products?

The only other thing that pops up is “Windows Defender” doing a quick scan

You don’t need a Windows Defender or at least you shoud disable its active protection. You can leave it then for on-demand scan only. But I think you don’t need it anyway and you should remove it from your comp.

I'm having the exact same problem; just started a couple of days ago. I'm not running any other security programs and Windows Defender is turned off.

The error messaging is vague and unhelpful.

I turned off Windows defender and reloaded NIS 2009 this morning. I'll let you know how it works out.

I think this is more common than Norton is admitting to.

Well that didn't last long! Firsr reboot and back to the Norton errors. I reloaded 2008 to be safe for now. In my service menu Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is set to automatic. Most things I read about it on the web says to leave it on automatic even if you have a third party firewall. I am not familiar with Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Any insight on this?

Thanks

Well that's ok until yours Windows Firewall is turned off. You can check that through Control Panel Windows Firewall icon.

I just reloaded 2009 and am running a full system scan. I'm not sure what you ment in you'r last post. It is it ok for me to turn off Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing befoer I reboot?

Thanks again,

Sid
