Hi petval333,

Have to tried to install it by "Run As Administrator"?

Here is a link to Run As Administrator.

Petval, Hi

Do or did you have any other Norton products on your computer?

Also, can you elaborate a little more on the failed installation?  For example, did the opening screen to install fail to appear?  Or did the next screen not appear?  You said the process stopped, but at what point?  What do you see and what didn't happen next?  Does anything appear in the notification section (the little section on the lower right).  Sometimes there are industry included software (Dell and Gateway are notorious) that make unilateral decisions for you and only tell you in little blurbs in the notification section -- you will need to hover over each icon to see if something is being blocked there.  Is anything else open on your computer (perhaps there is a dialogue box hidden somewhere -- try Alt-Tab to see if you can find it).

Hi mijcar,

I suggested Run As Administrator because as soon as petval333 hits "allow" in the UAC window, the installation stops. It sounds like it could be a permissions issue.

Could be, Phil.  It makes sense -- I'm always surprised when someone tries to install software without administrator permissions.

Let's see what Petval has to say.

I did try run as administrator with the same results - installer stops after UAC prompt for cancel or allow installation.  Norton tech support did a remote uninstall of all Norton products on my Dell PC with the Norton removal tool and also cleaned up the registruy. Dell had pre-installed Norton Save & Restore and Norton Scan on the system.

I haven't tried turning off UAC and trying the installation that way; this is what I had to do to install MS Office 2003.

If you had to turn off the UAC to install Office 2003, then there is something definitely wrong.  Do you have full administrator rights?  Limited rights?  I installed Office 2003 on Vista Home Premium six months ago with no problems at all.

If turning off UAC worked with Office, then I suggest doing the same thing with Norton.  More important, though, I would want to know what is going on.

I think it might be a good idea to download and run the Norton Recovery Tool CD.  Perhaps some sort of spyware or a virus may be keeping you from installing NIS.  It certainly won’t hurt anything to run  it and it may find something.

It seems your problem may be addressed by both the query and the response at this link:

http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-security/27945-uac-blocks-startup-program.html

UAC behavior seems more intrusive than viral.  And as the poster suggests, may merely be a matter of settings.

Please let us know how this turns out.

It turns out the original installer file was probably corrupt.

I went back to Norton and re-downloaded NIS 2009 installer and the new file allowed the installation.

I appreciate everyone's input to my problem...next time I'll recheck the install file before I post any problems.  Thanks all.
