NIS 2010 doesn't install (and nor will NIS 2008) HELP PLEASE!

When I try to install NIS2010, I get a 'symantec service framework stopped working and was closed' error and the installation crashes leaving a half installed version of NIS2010. The error log says there was a problem with CLTLMS.dll and ccSvcHst.exe. When OneClick support runs, it also crashes and I get a 'hsie2010 application has stopped working' error.

I then have to uninstall NIS2010 before I can access the internet again.

BACKGROUND: I had NIS2008 running perfectly on the machine for year or so, when it suddenly gave a message that the product needed to be activated. Nothing I did could get it to work so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling NIS2008 from the original CD. I got an error on installation similar to the NIS2010 error above (xxx stopped working and was closed). I then downloaded a newer version of NIS2008 and same story. I then saw a post about using the Norton Removal Tool, so I did that (twice rebooting between runs) and another post recommended also removingany Norton folders left behind after the uninstall and NRT run, so I did that ... when I ran the NRT I got a recommendation to download NIS2010, which I did and same story.

I shared the machine's drive and did a full scan from another machine (that has NIS2008 with the latest virus definitions etc) and it didnt find anything.

The machine in question is running Vista Home.

Help, help, help!  I am getting desperate! (And my wife thinks I'm a moron!)
