NIS 2010 prevents laptop from hibernating or sleeping

Please can anybody help with the following problem?

Since upgrading to NIS 2010 my laptop usually crashes if I select Hibernate or Sleep. Microsoft's WinDbg debugger reports that the crashes always occur in the program ccSvcHst.exe, which is part of NIS 2010 and of other Norton programs.

Norton technical support changed various settings - such as reducing the frequency of background scans - reinstalled NIS 2010, and changed the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\AutoEndTasks" registry setting. None of these changes fixed the problem.

Disabling or removing NIS 2010 fixes the problem, but then I am without anti-virus.

Other details:

I am running Windows Vista Business. The machine has all current patches installed*. There are no additional devices attached, and no non-standard drivers. The fault still occurs if no other applications are running.

* Both Windows Update and Secunia Personal Security Inspector report that all applications and drivers are up-to-date.
