NIS 2011 and Wireless router

Never mind, you are not directly exposed to the internet as the router seperates WAN (internet) from LAN, but your LAN is maybe only wirelessly a bit exposed. Maybe they set a lower security encryption level, like WEP instead of WPA2, which is reasonably safe for now.

By the way : you can always set your router password, as it only controls access to the router's settings and has nothing to do with network security keys and the like.

Maybe the laptop just needs a newer driver for the wireless network card. We then need to know the exact brand and type.

So... when you are home, just look at the situation and contact here again.

And..it's certainly not overkill..:smileysurprised:

ok thanks. Here is what I have been told. Wife did reset the router password after waiting like 3 hours
for wireless connection WPA2 was used and for encryption the tech set something not AES but said it was something newer and mor secure
Lap top still not able to connect to wireless
So router still has wirless on.
1 That ok as long as the settings mentioned above are on?
2. if the router was compromised during the 3 hours with only default password, would we still have been able to change the password?

There is really nothing newer than WPA2 with AES. So the tech is blabbing....

The laptop normally should be able to connect, if the network key is entered there, unless the network adapter in the laptop is incompatible with the router. Incompatibility can also exist if a too old driver is used.

How old is the latop?

I am not sure what your wife did reset, the router's password or the network encryption and network key.

I need more details on the laptop etc. When are going home?

Do not be too concerned, people need to do explicit actions, to compromise your computers and Norton is still there to protect the computers.

This all is now going a bit beyond the scope of this forum, it belongs more in the Tech Outpost.

I think i can help you (or your wife) out remotely, as long as there is one computer with a connection (wired or wirelessly) and it can connect to Internet. The problem must not be too big. If you want that, send me a PM.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks
Just for clarification
Router password was changed
WPA2 was clicked/check
and AES encryption activated

Thanks all

And now it works well?

laptop still not connecting, but thats no big deal as it is not our main computer.

but as far as the Desktop, everything seems fine.

Nice. You should notice that all the blocked connections you used to see in your NIS logs are no longer appearing, since they aren't reaching your computer anymore.

that is true. No longer see “Unused port blocking has blocked…”
