Keep in mind that I'm limited in how I can describe this, since it was never on my computer, nor did I have the opportunity to actually see how it infected the host computer. Bear with me keeping that in mind, though I do all the major IT work on this computer. It was on a friend's PC, who is not particularly savvy by any stretch. It came with the usual effects, etc., which I was able to easily counter and eventually delete every known trace of it with Malwarebytes Free, followed by SAS Free and CCleaner. It had also managed to destroy NIS 2011 beyond repair--luckily I had an offline installer handy on my utility flash drive. Either way, Antivirus 8 was allowed to download and then subsequently infect the computer while completely disrupting and destroying Norton, so I wanted to report it. Now for the major details:
Windows XP Pro SP3 x86, fully updated
NIS 2011 18.1.0.37 updated until point of infection w/ automatic live update.
User believed he was infected via email, got scare message, and subsequently downloaded.
Let me know if I've left out major details and thanks in advance.
