Okay, I have a quad-core and I set the manual AV scan threads to "auto". This suggests that NIS will use 8 threads.
Here is the issue. Despite the 8 threads, it appears total CPU utilization is 10% or less (meaning not very CPU intensive). However, in watching the directory paths displaying in the scanner, it appears to me that it is bouncing all over the disk. In other words, all these threads would appear to be thrashing the disk which would be the limiting resources.
However, on the other hand, despite a continuous disk activity the HD is very quiet. That would appear to indicate that it is not seeking, but rather maintaining spatial locality on the disk.
Just curious ... does anyone have any insights on this?
Thanks.
