Does anyone know the direct link for downloading NIS 2011 (netbook edition) -- i.e., not the link that goes through the Norton Downloader but the link that allows the installation file to be saved directly to the Desktop for future re-installation?
The direct download link for the full NIS 2011 product is
This information is precious, and it answers my question as originally posed. However, before I mark this thread as having been solved I have another question -- I'm not sure who would know the answer.
1. How does a netbook user determine which version of NIS (full or netbook) is currently installed on his/her netbook? The two installation file names have two different designations, as seen in the screen-prints below, but where in the installed Norton product do you find which of these two is the version actually installed?
NIS-NETBOOK-ESD-18-6-0-29-EN.exe
NIS-ESD-18-6-0-29-EN.exe
Is the information somehow indicated in the Support/About menu? If so, what is it there that would indicate which version is installed? Is it the Serial Number? the End Point ID? Current SKU? Family SKU? Obviously it can't be the Version Number, because the version number is the same in both cases. Or is the information indicated in the title displayed at the very top of the screen (which, on my screen, says simply 'Norton Internet Security') ?
Excellent question to which I don't know the answer since I've never seen the Netbook edition but someone must know.
BTW If you have a netbook but are licenced for say 3 PC Standard NIS don't worry because the main change in the netbook edition apart from coming on a thumbdrive is they altered the graphics to fit the smaller screens that the first neetbooks came with (8"?)
Apart from that there are default settings to save battery life, like not doing any idle tasks while running on battery which you can set in the standard version.
If this is where you are at then someone can surely advise about that.
Hang on for the answer to how do you know which you have .....
I'm sure if you have a chat with customer support, they could give you that information. It might also give that information in my norton account..
I would first check in www.mynortonaccount.com and see if it tells you which product has been registered to you. I would think if it was the netbook version, it would say so on that site.
If it's not there in my norton account. here's the lnik for customer support and you can ask them that question.
I finally managed to get a Chat connection, and this is the answer I got from the analyst , as copied from the transcript of the Chat session:
"....You can able to see name of the Norton program in the top of the Norton product interface...If the installed program is Netbook edition, then the Norton program name will Norton Internet Security Netbook Edition...."
So this answers my question. It is the displayed product name that tells the difference.
If you have NIS 2011 (full edition) installed, then it will say "Norton Internet Security" at the top of the screen
If you have NIS 2011 (netbook edition) installed, then it will say "Norton Internet Security Netbook Edition" at the top of the screen.
