This is running on an XP SP3 system that was running fine yesterday. When right-clicking on a file to scan from the drop-down menu, Norton doesn't scan, but instead generates a "Problem Detected" window that says, "Norton Internet Security has encountered an internal program error."
In addition, I cannot open the program from the desktop icon, or from the Programs menu. When I try this, I get a different error message that says, "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\18.1.0.37\uiStub.exe parameter is incorrect."
I tried reading the message boards here at Norton, trying the following from other posts to no avail:
1. Downloaded Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to try to uninstall and reinstall. I got the same error message regarding uiStub.exe when I tried to run it. Uninstalled it with CCleaner instead. Rebooted.
2. Downloaded Kaspersky Removal Tool (computer had Kaspersky AV on it previously). I ran this tool again -- I ran it when I first installed NIS earlier this month, but I thought I'd try again. Rebooted, reinstalled NIS 2011. Still didn't help.
3. Tried opening and running NRT in safe mode and was successful. Followed all prompts, including rebooting and downloading NIS to reinstall, even though I have a disk. It's notable at this point that at no time was I asked to re-enter a product key. Norton recognized my registration without me doing anything.
4. Rebooted several times after install and ran Live Update until no updates remained. Rebooted again.
I can open the software from the system tray icon and do a quick, full, or custom scan from there. I cannot use the icons or drop-down scans. I only get the error message about in internal program error as described above. I am running this same software on eight other machines without having this difficulty. Scans seem to have been running regularly and correctly on this machine up until this morning.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
