NIS 2011 Product Key purchased on ebay

I purchased a Norton Internet Security 2011 for 3 PCs Product Key on ebay last week to renew my expiring NIS on my 3 PCs. I have had good luck in the past doing this and this particular seller had sold many of these keys in the past with a 100% feedback rating so I expected no hitches. I want to make sure I have a legitimate product key so I renew my product with the key and register it with Norton Account where it says it is in fact for just 1 PC and no activations remaining. In contrast, last years NIS says for 3 PCs and counted down the activations as I installed it on each of my 3 PCs. I went ahead and renewed my other two computers and both updated the subscriptions but I am concerned that this may be a temporary sitiuation. I contacted the seller and he reassured me that after speaking with Norton Customer Support his key will work on 3 PCs at the same time. I then tried to speak with Norton but after waiting 45 minutes on hold, I Live Chatted with Nagandra who also assured me it will work on 3 PCs and she said she would synchronize my product. After rechecking Norton Account it still says the product is for 1PC no activations remain. All 3 computers have 365 days remaining on subscription after 24 hours…do I have a problem or am I just worried about nothing? 5

Hi NORTOFF,

As suggested to you by BanMidou, you can wait for a few hours to see if the status of the activations changes, especially since it was fixed/confirmed by the Symantec support agent.

However: I strongly recommend that you never purchase Norton products or other licenced software from eBay. Not only are there legal problems with such a purchase, but there is, as you yourself experienced, no guarantee whether the product key will work (properly) or not. You cannot rely on good luck in this case. You can find more information in this thread:

If you don't want to worry about your future Norton purchases in the future, then it is worth paying more money when buying Norton via official and trustworthy stores.

I have seen suggestions that it sometimes even takes a day or two for the database to resynchronize ....

The Norton rep did assure me I would have no future issues with the product and I was thinking about buying ANOTHER product for a fourth computer from this seller…if buying these product keys with download links on Ebay is NOT authorized by Norton then I will not do so. Maybe a Norton Employee could comment with the official company line?

You can hang on for a reply from a Norton Staffer -- names in red -- but basically these forums are for technical problems and yours is a commercial, marketing problem which Customer Support is the route to use.

Have you checked the price you paid against the price you can buy a copy from one of the retail stores who send out weekend flyers since I see massive rebates and since they are authorized retailers you are totally in the clear under the Norton Satisfaction Warranty for 60 days.

There are also reputable mail order sources whose names I'm sure I don't have to mention ... and Norton don't want us to give names and upset their other outlets!

Hi NORTOFF,

Here is a good discussion about buying Symantec products on eBay:

Buying/Selling Symantec Software Safely on eBay

I contacted customer support again and they once again assured me that the product is valid and for 3 pcs…thank you all for your input! I will probably buy the next product retail and skip all the ebay hassle.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm glad it is resolved in your favor.
