NIS 2012 and Error Code 3039, 65543

Hi,

I am using windows vista and this error has just appeared. I recently re-ended my Norton subscription and got updated to 2012 version.  It was done via my husbands laptop.  He went on-line and talked on live chat, the guy then connected to both laptops and installed 2012 on them.  It was working OK for about a week then this error appeared.  I'm not running any other security or anti virus program.  Any suggestions on how to clear the error would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

[edit: Clarified subject.]

Hi, kathil71,

Welcome to our community!

What product are you using? As there is no released 2012 version of Norton 360 yet, my first guess is that it's Norton Antivirus or Norton Internet Security. If it's actually the Beta version of Norton 360 v.6 (2012), then that likely explains your issue right there, since Betas are by definition not quite ready for service on a production machine--but I don't see a Live Chat technician installing a Beta on your computer, so again we're probably looking at NAV/NIS.

Once we know your product for sure, we'll ask the moderators to break your issue off the other poster's thread and move it to the discussion board for the right product, rather than Norton 360, so it can get specialized and individual attention. Most likely, though, if you are experiencing a similar problem, you can fix it with the same (remove-and-reinstall) process that I gave the other users--just substituting "NAV/NIS" for each "Norton 360." (Also, the Identity Safe cautions and steps do not apply to Norton Antivirus, only to NIS and 360.)

Keep us posted; we're here to help. Although that's "the imperial 'we,'" since it's 1 AM here and I'm going to sleep--whether I head into the bedroom or doze off here at my keyboard!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I am using Norton Internet Security.  Hope you can help!!

OK, I've asked for these posts to be moved to their own thread on that forum. Assuming that you've already tried running manual LiveUpdates until it tells you that you now have all the latest protection updates, annd rebooted your machine when done, we're now at the remove-and-reinstall. I will give you the process I provided the original poster on this thread, tailored to NIS, below--so you don't have to come back to the original post to find it.

You will not have to pay for the program again, and your subscription days will automatically be recognized when you reinstall this way. Here are the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Export your Identity Safe cards/credentials to your desktop if you've set these up, so you'll be able to import them back in when your clean install is complete.
  2. Make sure that you have set up (and can still access) your Norton Account, and that your current Norton Internet Security subscription is showing under the "Products" tab, with a big yellow "Download" button at right; this is how you will reinstall your Norton product and have it linked automatically to your subscription.
  3. From Windows Control Panel, use the Add/Remove Programs function to uninstall your NIS. This will disconnect all your critical system drivers from your security product so they aren't deleted by the next step. Be sure to take advantage of any opportunity you're given to save your Norton settings so they can be reloaded by NIS when you reinstall it later in the process. Reboot your computer when this is complete.
  4. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure a complete uninstall of your existing Norton product. This is necessary because of the extent to which a security package needs to have its tendrils deeply intertwined throughout the Operating System to do its job, and will clean up debris Windows leaves behind that may interfere with proper operation of your Norton product.
  5. Once the Norton Removal Tool has finished, reboot your computer again, and immediately log back into your Norton Account and click that big yellow Download button. Remember, until you do this, you are temporarily without your Norton protection.

This last step will reinstall NIS and link it automatically to your existing subscription. You should now be back in business, protected by "the speed and power of Norton!" :smileyvery-happy:
