Since updating to NIS 2012 from 2011 file copy operations between the Windows 7 Pro 64 bit host and Windows Virtual PC are VERY VERY slow. So much so as to be virtually unuseable. Any ideas?
I'd always kind of hoped Norton was scanning the files! That makes no difference.
I can try this out today and let you know what I find out. Quick question, do you have NIS installed on the VM system as well?
No. I don't do very much Windows stuff on the VM so I only put AVG on, but that was on with 2011 before 2012 and was OK.
One more question Bozz, what os do you have running in the VM? Is it windows XP, the virtual enviroment that comes with Windows 7? Or is it something else? I am in the process of setting up my test machine and want to make sure I have same set up as you when I do the test.
I did not notice the same slow down with my test machine. Can you try the following:
Open main ui and click on settings
Then click on Computer tab
Then click on "Anti-virus and Sonar Exclusions"
You will then see three items
- Items to Exclude from Scans
- Itesms to Exclude from Auto-Protect, SONAR, and Download Intelligence Detection
The last one we dont need to worry about. Can you click on the configure link next to these two options and include the folder were the base image and the current image are located to execlude from these two options. Let me know if that makes a difference.
I was running XP in the VM. I did what you said, no difference. I uninstalled AVG so as not to muddy the waters, no difference.
The client PC is mapped as a network drive, Z: on the Virtual PC
If I do a DIR Z: - takes minutes
If I do a DIR \\TSCLIENT\C - virtually instant
Just tried another thing, mapped X: and Z: as below:
X: \\TSCLIENT\C Microsoft Terminal Services
Z: \\ian-7pc\c7 Microsoft Windows Network
DIR X: - instant
DIR Z: - Very slow

Thanks for the detailed information. I will try again with my test machine. If I can't repo it I will have to give you instructions on how to get more logs and information so we can track the problem down, thanks.
I prefer Microsoft Virtual PC over Windows Virtual PC (XP mode), but they work very similar to each other.
When your VM is up and running, treat it like any other networked computer.
Go into NIS on your host system and in the network security map make sure it is set as shared or full trust.
If at all possible, setup the VM's to use static IP addresses and check the box to "Exclude From IPS scanning"
That last setting was added a year or so ago to alleviate problems with slow file transfers over the network in some situations.
Dave
I was finally able to repo the problem on my test machine following the same steps you did. Even after adding the Virutal PC to trusted devices and excluding from IPS scanning it still shows the slowdown. I then uninstalled Norton and I still had the problem.
I did a search on google, seems to be a bug with Virtual PC. Thankfully there is a work arround that is located here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888750
Just follow method 2 and you should be good to go. I would also do what Dave suggested just to be on safe side.
So the problem occurred coincidentally at the same time as the NIS upgrade, strange (that sounds sarcastic is really is not meant to be). The network changes I made did solve the problem for me but I have made the changes that you suggested. Many thanks for your help.

Bozz, I don't think that it was coincidental. NIS installs network drivers that work very closely with the code referenced in Microsoft's KB. I suspect that NIS merely exposed the Microsoft bug.
