NIS 2012 - Blue Screen after Installation

Hi, I have installed Norton Internet Security 2012 successfully but upon restart, there is a blue screen with the error code 0x000000d1 (Driver IRQL not less or equal). I have checked the cause of this blue screen and found it to be a file called symnets.sys. I have tried removing all traces of Norton products with the Norton removal tool and tried redownloading and reinstalling NIS 2012 to no avail.

Furthermore, to eliminate hardware causes, I have run a chkdsk (with parameters /r and /f) as well as carrying out several passes in Memtest x86 which have both resulted in no faults. I would be grateful if anyone could provide any assistance on this matter, thanks!

If you are using Windows XP you can use this tool http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6676. It will help with registry reading problems by services while your PC is going to restart.

Hi Fishpan

Sorry to hear that you got a BSOD.

If the issue is caused because of the SYMNETS.sys, I want to know if you had any  Norton Product installed on this computer before installing Norton Internet Security 2012.

Also please let me know the operating system.

Thanks

Mahi

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit at the moment. To clarify, I get the blue screen upon restart after installing NIS 2012; just after logging on - presumably when the Norton security drivers are loading. Also I have attached a summary of the minidump of the blue screen to help with troubleshooting. Thanks for any and all assistance!

I had NIS 2011 installed prior to upgrading to 2012 but I uninstalled that and followed up with the Norton removal tool before downloading and installing NIS 2012.

You are welcome Fishpan.

The driver which is causing the BSOD is a Network driver. Would you be able to let me know which Network Adapter you are using?

Thanks

Mahi

Hi, I'm currently using my Local Area Connection (Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Adapter) actively. In addition I have LogMeIn Hamachi installed as well if that helps. Thanks!

Seen this kind of issue with Atheros Adapters.

So just want to know if you have any Atheros Wireless Adapter?

Thanks

Mahi

I seem to have a Bluetooth network adapter listed under Network Connections - it is currently not connected, however. The bluetooth adapter responsible is integrated in my motherboard (Asus P8P67 Pro) and is named Atheros AR3011. Do you have any recommendations as to what to do now? Thanks!

Hello, I got the same problem.

After installation my notebook shows a blue screen. I'm using the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. Do you have any idea how I can work around that problem?

Greetings from Germany

@ Conan

Are you able to boot your computer after the BSOD?

If Yes, then please try one thing, Go to Start-->Run--> and type "devmgmt.msc"

and In device manager under Network Adapters--? Right click on the Atheros Adaptor and click on Disable.

Then try to install the Norton and check if the Norton get installed successfully.

And let me know, don't enable the Network Adaptor yet.

Thanks

Mahi

Hi Fishpan.

Please follow the same post above, disable the Atheros from the Network Adapters.

Please let me know the result.

Thanks

Mahi

No,

actually after every reboot it shows a blue screen. Well Windows recommended this Repairmode but that didn't work either. After that i tried Safe Mode or Secure Mode( i don't know the actual translation for this) and uninstalled NIS. After that my notebook reboots perfectly like nothing happend.

But i will try to disable my Network controller and then install NIS.

ConanD

I am pretty sure that the issue is because of the Atheros Adapter.

Just disable it and install NIS and try to reboot 2-3 time an see if there is any BSOD.

Mahi

No didn't work.

Well this time the installation worked and for a split second i could see the NIS interface but then blue screen again. Restart showed blue screens, too. Than back in safe mode and uninstalled it and now it works fine again.

ConanD

Just to confirm, under Device manager the Atheros Adapter was disabled. Correct?

Also just want to know after the crash, did you try to boot in the Safe Mode with Networking?

Also if possible could you please upload the latest minidump files?

Thanks

Mahi

Yes, I disabled all Network Controllers in the Device Manager. Then i installed NIS and made it through the installation and right at the second where it showed me the interface it crashed with the same BSOD like it always does.

No i tried just normal Safe mode without networking. That workes fine, i just unistall it and i restart again in normal mode and it works fine.

Hi ConanD

Thank you for the files.

I checked the Mindump files and the file causing the problem is the same SYMNETS.SYS

Could you please tell me the Version of the driver file for the Atheros Network Adapter

Thanks

Mahi

Hi, I thought I had got it working - I had NIS 2012 working for a while with the Atheros Bluetooth adapter disabled until the internet stop working. Upon restart I received the same blue screen as I had before. Could you please advise as to what action to take next? Thanks.

Well the driver version is 8.0.0.316 . And the driver date is 02.03.2010. At least thats what the Device Manager said.

@ Conan @ Fishpan

Could you please try to check for any latest driver update for the Atheros, or else could you just try to rollback driver for a previous version and Install Norton.

Thanks

Mahi
