NIS 2012 - error message 8504,100 upon new installation

So I just installed NIS 2012 (had McAfee previously), and everything works like the LiveUpdate, etc. except the Quickscan feature and more annoyingly I can't open the console and I get the aforementioned error message.  The Quickscan feature seems to stall at 6800 items.  Anyways, I tried the following:

 

1. the Norton Removal and Reinstall, but I got another message saying NRR couldn't remove the previous installed and that I'd have to remove it manually and then reinstall which I did (I reinstalled it from disc).  Still couldn't open the console and same error message.

 

2. LiveUpdating everything then restarting and it worked and restarted - same result. 

 

3. The console did come up finally so I thought everything was fixed, so I closed the console, then tried to open it again and got 8504,100 again.  Autofix couldn't fix it the first couple of times, then Autofix seemed to work saying it could install a patch after which I'd have to restart, so I let it do it's thing then restarted, and got 8504,100 again.  

 

4. I also was unable to open the support website on Firefox which is my default browser, and couldn't open Firefox at all (it was open in Task Manager but didn't open at all and neither did Google Chrome so I'm typing this in Opera).  The first time I tried typing in this box in Opera I could type a little bit, then all of a sudden it wouldn't let me type anything.  I reloaded the page and was able to finish typing this.  

 

5. I'm currently doing a Trend Micro Housecall virus-scan.  I had scanned with MAB and Avast (then removed Avast) prior to removing McAfee and installing NIS so thought computer was clean.  

 

Trying to install this and get it working has been a total nightmare.  Suggested fixes (when I can actually access the suggestions) don't work.  Help!  Thanks.
