I've realized that NIS 2012 leaves ports open by default when I could get connected to SQL from a remote site to my PC where SQL is installed. No rule locks SQL. Usually firewall starts with a deny rule. If you want to open a port you need to instruct the firewall to open that specific port from a specific IP and so on. NIS 2012 does not behave as a firewall. That surprised me and I suspected I changed some settings on NIS. So I decided to start over: installed NIS 2012 on a fresh PC where RDP port is NOT enabled. After NIS 2012 is finished the RDP is enabled from any source. How is that possibile?
Hi,
by default NIS turns on the intellingent firewall feature. This is an automated one, that decides on its own and it is the best for the not so advanced users. Of course this can be turned off:
1. Open the NIS settings
2. Go to Network -> Smart Firewall
3. Click on Configure [+] by the Advanced settings
4. Turn off Automatic Program Control
Let us know if this is the setting you searched for :).
