NIS 2012 Not Scanning USB Flash Drive

Hello,

Yesterday, I installed NIS 2012 and so far it is going well.  One of my concerns is with 'Removable Media Scan' in the 'Real Time Protection' Settings.  I have this set to 'ON' and when I insert a USB flash drive and access a file, there is absolutely no indication that NIS 2012 is scanning anything on the drive.  If I check the scan history, there is no record there either.

Does anyone know how to correct this?

How exactly should NIS 2012 behave when I insert a USB flash drive and when I access a file on the drive?

Thanks in advance.

Hi this is the official info for Removable Media Scan with NIS 2012

Norton Internet Security 2012

Auto-Protect

Auto-Protect loads into memory when Windows starts, providing constant protection while you work.

Auto-Protect uses the threat signatures that Norton Internet Security receives during virus definition updates and other security updates to determine the safety of an executable file.

When Auto-Protect detects a virus, it tries to repair the infected file by default and automatically deletes worms. If Auto-Protect cannot repair an infected file, Auto-Protect does not let you access the file. To handle any irreparable infected files, you should scan your entire computer for viruses, and then scan any infected files that are found.

After dealing with an infected file, you should scan your entire computer for viruses to detect any other infections.

Keep Auto-Protect turned on at all times to prevent viruses from infecting your computer. Auto-Protect works in the background, without interrupting your work.

Auto-Protect does the following automatically:
  • Detects and protects your computer against all types of viruses

It also detects and protects your computer against macro viruses, boot sector viruses, and memory resident viruses

  • Detects and protects you against all types of Trojan horses, worms, and other malicious code

  • Protects your computer from the viruses that are transmitted through the Internet

Checks all files that you download from the Internet, including Java Applets and ActiveX controls

  • Keeps your system safe at all times

Checks for viruses every time that you use software programs on your computer, insert floppy disks or other removable media, and modify or access documents

  • Monitors your computer for any unusual symptoms that may indicate an active virus

Auto-Protect includes the following options:

Caching

Improves the performance of your computer. If you turn on this option, Norton Internet Security keeps a record of the files that are accessed often. Norton Internet Security does not scan those recorded files, even when you restart your computer.

Removable Media Scan

Checks for boot viruses when you access removable media. After the removable media has been scanned for boot viruses, it is not scanned again until it is reinserted or formatted. If you still suspect that a boot virus infects your removable media, ensure that the Auto-Protect option is turned on to rescan the removable media. You then insert the removable media and open it from My Computer for Auto-Protect to rescan it. You can also scan it manually to verify that it is not infected.

I don't think it would "scan" the drive fully and show the results in scan results (in the traditional aspect).  It would simply scan the files on the USB drive as it is accessed.  Also, you could run the scan manually by right clicking the drive in my computer and selecting scan now.

Thanks for all the replies!

I suppose that answers my question.  I just assumed that because NIS 2012 was so thorough about everything else that I thought it would give SOME indication that it had performed a task on the drive.  But apparently not.  I think it would be nice if there was a setting you could change to cause the program to scan a drive on insertion or at least acknowledge that the drive had been inserted.

Thanks again.

Hi Meatball i think Norton wants to minmise the messages and prompts given so it does

not effect the comuter systems performance

i do agree maybe a setting could be used to turn on or off  a scan result pop up message

of Removable Media scans when devcies are inserted into the computer. Perhaps you

coud put that in the Product Suggestions Forum.:smileywink:

As  that has helped to answer your question could you select Accept as Solution to help

clean up the forum and to assist future users of the Community Forum if they are after a

answer to the same question you have asked.:smileyhappy:

That would be very helpfull to all.

Cheers:smileywink:
