NIS seems to be running OK (ie, green checkmark and google searches show safe site icons), but when I try to open the Norton control panel, all I get is a brief "flash" to the screen. The Task manager indicates the NIS application is running. The icon appears in the tray. When I close the window, the icon disappears and task manager removes it from active applications.
I tried executing from start menu, desktop icon, and right click of check mark'd icon but same result. (Actually none of the local functions showing on the right click menu seem to work either).
Tried Norton uninstall/reinstall.
Problem went away until I downloaded latest Norton updates.
Tried Norton unistall/reinstall twice more.
Didn't download latest Norton updates.
Both times the problem went away until I re-booted the system, and the problem returned.
Disabled Windows browser Defender.
Ran Malware Bytes with no problems indicated.
Am running same product on my other Dell laptop (Latitude with XP) and have zero problems.
Norton remove/reinstall and it worked; immediately thereafter ran live update following which it failed.
Additionally, It looks like the screen is attempting to go up on desktop as sometimes there is a blank area the size of the control panel left up there but there are no controls/icons/text present. That blank area is 'dead' as far as any ability to click on positions where icons would normally be positioned.

Blank area disappears when task is terminated.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hi, Have you run any scans with the likes of Malwarebytes free scanner
Just curious - any reason you are still on IE8 (especially since you are Win 7)?
Perhpas you could right click on the Norton Icon in the SystemTray (by the system clock) and select Get Support - let it update and scan and see if it fixes/reports anything andif that helps.
