Just got a new 8.1 machine. Should SmartScreen be turned off or will it play nice w/ Norton 21.x
I don't know that it has any effect on NIS -- I have it on and I let W8.1 boot to it in the normal way -- the desktop is only a keystroke away!
You know about the joys of that down arrow on the Start Screen that puts up an All Programs listing from which you can select items and pin them to the Start Screen and/or the Taskbar? Windows 8.1 no longer automatically puts a tile on the Start Screen when you install a desktop application .....
Hi Bloated_Germ,
I think it is appropriate to keep it ON, it should not interfere with NIS and should also provide additional security beyond that provided by NIS for the system.

Can you amplify how it provides additonal security -- to the best of my knowledge it's just a GUI from which you launch "apps" or switch to the desktop GUI ....

Hello High,
From what I understand, Bloated_Germ writes "SmartScreen" which should refer to "WIndows SmartScreen" which is a component of Windows for security and measures to prevent the user to install or manipulate inside the OS with malicious software that is downloaded from the network, while you're talking about the "Start Screen" which is what you said.
At least I hope that I have correctly interpreted what the user has requested.

My apologies -- I didn't even know/remember that Windows had a SmartScreen and automatically read StartScreen ......
I'll leave it to someone else to consider questions of interference with NIS and its elements.

No problem, Hugh, I imagined that you read StartScreen ...
Regarding interference with NIS, I am not aware that there are, at least for me I never had problems with this Windows component ever since I installed Windows 8/8.1
Cheers,
Sandro
The SmartScreen Filter should be left ON. Quoting from the following article:
"One cool thing in Windows 8, they built the Smart Screen Filter right into the operating system," he said. "Even if your browser is terrible at detecting bad URLs, it still works. They pulled it out of Internet Explorer, they're not saying that you must use IE for protection. We had to turn it off for testing! It was too effective, 98 to 100 percent accurate. Dennis Batchelder and Joe Blackbird at Microsoft said we should leave it on, but we couldn't do that and still test the antivirus."
