NIS Activation Key-some letters and numbers won't work

I'm trying to enter an activation key in the Renew Subscription Dialogue, but when I come to the 5 midway through the key, it doesn't type.  This is true of some other letters and numbers in a different activation key I tried.  The 5 works in all other programs including right now.  See: 5.

The other key it is the O and a few others.

Also tried copying and pasting and it completely skips those numbers or letters in the paste.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the top row of numbers, or do you have a keypad on the right?  If you happen to switch back and forth, have you got the num lock on or off?

I use the top row and the number pad.  It's a laptop so I have also used the laptop keyboard and a usb keyboard.  Because this doesn't happen anywhere else with any other software, I believe it actually is within Norton.

I'm on a desktop at the moment, but if I turn off the num lock, I can only use the top row of numbers:

123456789.  I can't use the key pad with it off.  You didn't say if your's was on or off.  Unfortunately, these kinds of questions are part of troubleshooting.

It is very unlikely that Norton would take exception to certain numbers or from where the numbers are punched in. There may be a program conflict with certain keyboard software.  Which keyboard is giving you the problems or is it both of them.

I have tried it with the number lock on and with it off on both keyboards and am getting the same result.  In fact it is not just the 5.  When I use the top row with the num-lock off (1234567890) when trying to enter the activation code it looks like the attached picture:

Norton Issue.png

essentially like this: 2346789  Notice the 1, 5 and 0 are missing.

Same result when using the num pad with numlock.

Some letters also don't show up like O, I, and U.

Again, when in MS Office, Online in IE, Firefox or Chrome, they all work.  I have only seen this with this dialogue.

Thanks for the help.

This is odd.

I'm using NAV 2011 on this system but I opened the renewal box and it also won't take any 5's or O's.  (letter O).

Where did you get the key and is it 25 digits long and for the correct version you have installed?

Dave

Edit-  1,I and U also don't work for me.

I have no idea about "5". But for the letter "O", I found the following:

If your subscription key or the Renewal Code has a "0" in it, type the number zero and not the letter "O."

You can find this information the following support article:

Editing...

Sometimes, it may not be "5", and may be "S" (the letter "s"). Can you replace "5" and "O" with "S" and "0" and then try to renew it.

I think some characters are disabled by design, because 5 and O are disabled for me as well. If that is the case, then they may not be sending keys with these letters.

Hmm.  Definitely odd.  What version of Norton have you installed, download or disc?  Check whether it is Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus, or N360(s) or N360(p). Warning:  Please do not post your activation key on the forum

None of the keys are interchangeable.  What we have seen is a user download and install one thing and purchase the activation for a different thing.  If numbers are not in the proper sequence, or where a letter should be, this might result.

Another issue has been purchasing Norton from Ebay, for example, and being given an invalid or already used key.

So let's check out those possibilities.  It will be a while before we can see your image as Moderator approval is required.  You can see it, but we will be a bit longer.

A valid new key has 25 charactures and the first one is different for each version:

J = NIS

V = NAV

T = 360

A 19 characture key code is a "renewal" code that will add the time to the existing amount.

Dave

I have installed Norton Internet Security 2011.  Originally on this computer I had 2010.  All keys start with J so they are for NIS.

I work at a non-profit.  The person before me bought the keys from Techsoup.org, a donation resource for non-profits.  Unfortunately the previous person didn't know what she was doing and bought around 24 keys each available for 3 computers for one year.  We have 10 computers total, not 72, but that's another story :smileysad:

Those were bought in 2008.  I have been using them as subscriptions ran out and things have worked really well.  We are actually now coming to our last few licenses but they are the ones I can't enter due to this issue.  All the other ones have worked.  The last update to some of our computers was October 2010, but even then these 2 particular keys weren't typing in.

I have never had an issue with 2009, 2010 or 2011 upgrades and not being able to use certain keys.  Even when I type in an expired license it accepts it and then tell me it expired.

The S, 0, O, 5 all don't work.  It does seem like those would be blocked.  Is that new since these keys came out, I wonder?

Those 2 keys may be bogus, but are they the only ones you have left?

For 10 systems, you would need 4 keys per year.  24 keys should have been enough for all of them for 6 years.

Minus a few expired keys that were only used on one computer.  :smileymad: That's what I mean when I don't think the person knew what they were doing.  So yes, the last 2.

Houston we have an ID10T issue on our hands.  Call in the PEBKAC unit.  Team 6.

Sorry all.  I dug into records dating back to 2007 and found the 5 was really a 6.  How embarrassing.  It seems the Norton keys don't use 5 or S or 0 or O or I or 1 because they are so confusing for people.

I am impressed with how quickly the help came.  Ultimately I ended up chatting with some one as Dave suggested and began the hunt for the original documents.

Again, thanks for the help and sorry about the wild goose chase.

I'm glad it worked out for you, customer support is always there to help you.
