NIS and virtual machines

Suppose Windows 7 (or 8 Pro) is my host operating system with NIS running.

Will NIS protect me from malware that enters my computer from inside a windows, linux or ubuntu virtual machine?

Small world -- I just earlier on posted a query to a colleague about this since I just came across this on a Microsoft web site about XP Mode:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

<< Antivirus software isn't included with Windows XP Mode. Even if your computer running Windows 7 already has antivirus software, you should also install antivirus software in Windows XP Mode to help defend your computer against viruses. >>

So that's what Microsoft says about it with Windows.

Hi MooseTracker,

Definitely each VM (same as is required on a multi-boot OS) needs to have its own AV protection software installed.

There is some controversy over that just because the VM is hosted inside another running OS but the reality is that the VM is running all its own software and has it's own access to the Internet (with a different IP address at that) and therefore must have its own protection. The same thing applies to the browser in the VM which is its own browser and therefore should be up to date on all patches. The VM OS also has to be up to date on all it's patches and security fixes.

What it boils down to is that everything you update on a non VM OS (e.g., regular OS) should also be installed and kept updated in a VM hosted OS.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for clarifying the scope of NIS within VMs.

New question regarding the NIS 3 PC license.

Again the host O/S is running NIS which means 1 license is used. If I start 2 guest VMs both with NIS installed does that consume all 3 licences?

Hi MooseTracker,

Technically each activation will count toward the total allowed. But there has been very mixed results with this with many users reporting it did not take away an activation and some others saying it did.

Though there is no guarantee, Customer Service  via Chat has generally added an activation back on in such cases.

But again, the official answer is that each one would take an activation.

Best wishes.

Allen
