I was previously running NIS 2009 on a Windows XP machine. Under that configuration it was possible to turn off NIS smart firewall and use Windows Firewall.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 and NIS 2011. It appears that you can turn Smart Firewall on and off, but once you install NIS you are no longer able to turn on Windows Firewall.
I was having some connectivity problems in the past - thats why I upgraded - and I wanted to make sure that this was a normal circumstance. Can anyone shed some light? Thank you...
This is a new Windows thing, not limited to Norton. When Windows 7 detects any third-party firewall installed, it turns over all control for the firewall operation to the third-party program. WIndows bows out gracefully so that there is no chance of overlapping firewalls causing problems . Until you fully uninstall Norton, the Windows firewall will be unavailable, even when the Norton firewall is disabled.
Wow ... this is good to know. I thought the Windows 7 Firewall would automatically kick in ... thanks for this info ... tin
I'm now having a few browser problems loading certain sites (this affects all browsers - chrome, firefox, ie.) Is it possible to turn off Smart Firewall and go back to Windows Firewall in Win 7? How is this done?

NIS has a feature called the smart firewall which replaces the windows firewall. So long as everything is working as designed windows will report its firewall off and Norton will report its firewall on.
Do you see a red flag of any indication that you firewall is turned off on your system tray? If not meaning that your computer is protected. Usually Security Software with firewall automatically turns off the firewall of the windows, to aviod conflict with its features.
