I just upgraded from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011. I am also using Outlook 2007. With NIS 2010, if email went into the Outlook Junk Email Folder, I could then click the "This is Spam" button and send it to the Norton AntiSpam Folder. However, it seems this is not possible with NIS 2011. If email goes to my Outlook Junk Email Folder, the "This Is Spam" button is greyed out. It seems this button only works if the email goes directly to Outlook Inbox. Did Symantec change this part of the antispam program or do I have a problem? For that matter, is there a way to turn off the Outlook Junk Email folder and let all (suspected) spam go directly to the Norton AntiSpam Folder? Thanks for your help!
Hi Allen,
Thanks for your reply, I greatly appreciate it. I forgot to mention that I am having this problem on both my desktop and laptop. To answer your questions, NIS 2011 is the only security program I am using.
It is version 18.1.0.37 and I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Jon,
Can you check the other things mentioned in my last post along with the other thread I provided the link to?
Also how did you perform the upgrade to NIS 2011? Did you update through the Update Center or did you download the full version of 2011 and install over the top? If you installed over the top did you choose the option to retain your current NIS settings?
Thanks very much.
Allen
Allen,
I did check the settings and NIS 2011 is set for antispam/client integration/outlook. I am not sure why I would have to change any settings in Outlook now as it worked fine before upgrading from NIS 2010 to 2011.
Jon
I updated from the update center and installed over NIS 2010.
Hi Jon,
I am suggesting these as things to check. If Outlook is configured to do keyword filtering (which is default) then it is certainly possible that it can catch things before NIS Antispam kicks in.
It is possible that subtle changes in NIS 2011 might allow Outlook's filtering to kick in before NIS whereas before perhaps NIS would kick in first. This is just one possibility.
I have been through all this on my Outlook 2007 and it has worked fine over the years. It is likely that Outlook also has at least some sender addresses and/or email domains configured for Junk email which might have even pre-dated your initial installation of NIS.
In the thread I linked to earlier it simply mentions checking how Outlook is current configured and ensuring that keyword filtering and such is turned off. It also outlines how to remove anything from Outlook's current blocked list to ensure that NIS Antispam is able to take full control.
It is also possible that NIS 2011 might have had a bad install.
We can certainly uninstall/reinstall NIS 2011 with the use of the Norton Removal Tool to cover this last possibility but before we do this I would suggest that you check the configuration as outlined in my reference thread.
Best wishes.
Allen
Just a follow up.....I uninstalled NIS 2011 from both of my computers and then downloaded and installed the full versions. After configuring everything, the Norton AntiSpam program worked well. However, it quit this morning. Once again, it only works if email goes to my inbox. Considering that antispam program worked flawlessly in NIS 2010 and none of my settings have been changed in Outlook on either of my two computers, I am positive it is a problem with NIS 2011.
Are any other members having this problem? Do I have to go back to using NIS 2010 or worse yet, a competitor's program?
HI JONin92656,
Thanks for the update. Similar issues that I have seen reported before were on NIS 2010 and at worst were cleared up by using the Norton Removal tool along with reinstalling NIS. I don't recall seeing any reports of this against NIS 2011 except for yourself. I am also running the very same combination of W7 Ultimate 32 bit with Outlook 2007 and have no problems.
As I mentioned before I still think it is possible that Outlook's filtering could be kicking in before NIS's antispam.
If there is a problem with NIS 2011 installation, then doing a conventional uninstall and reinstall may not correct the problem. The Norton removal tool was designed for just that type of purpose, to clean up faulty installations and to help ensure that when you reinstall, it will install properly.
I can't tell you how many problems of all types on the forum have been resolved by use of the removal tool in combination with reinstalling the software.
So I'm going to recommend that you go through this process again as outlined below. If your NIS 2011 installation is faulty this will give you the best chance to getting it resolved.
If this does not work I will request that Symantec look into this.
If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.
Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.
Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.
Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.
Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.
For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.
Do a conventional uninstall of NIS via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.
Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.
Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

Hi Allen,
Thanks for your suggestions. I have decided NOT to use the Norton Removal Tool because of all the Symantec/Norton programs on my computers. I would have to back up all settings first, uninstall, reinstall, do many live updates and configurations and frankly, I just don't have the time.
Now, a couple of hours ago, the AntiSpam programs on both computers started working flawlessly. Then...about 15 minutes ago, they both stopped. I am not sure what is happening or why, but I may have to remove NIS 2011 and revert back to NIS 2010. I NEVER had a problem with that program at all.
One suggestion I have is to bring have the CPU usage meters which were present on NIS 2010. I liked them a lot and since I do computer consulting, I showed them to my clients as a selling point for Norton and the work I was doing for them.
Thank you again for all your great suggestions!
Jon
Hi Jon,
I do understand where you are coming from regarding the Norton removal tool but unfortunately sometimes this is necessary in order to resolve problems like this.
As a normal rule when you upgrade from year to year you do not need to use the removal tool but instead install over the top of your current version and it works fine most of the time. But when problems arise, sometimes unfortunately that is the only way to resolve them.
However, doing a downgrade is not recommended without the use of the removal tool. The software is designed around the fact that users move forward and not backwards. You may be able to downgrade to NIS 2010 and have everything work fine but it is risky so use of the removal tool is highly recommended if you want to do this.
When you first posted on the 7th you mentioned that you upgraded from NIS 2010 to 2011 but just to make sure, had you ever run the Beta version of 2011 at any point?
Even though I recognize that the removal tool is a "pain" particularly if you have multiple Norton/Symantec products I would highly encourage you to reconsider this decision.
Do you mind me asking which other Norton/Symantec products you have? Any subscription based product like NIS will have your product key in your Norton account. Others can be found in confirmation emails for online purchase, CD or accompanying documentation if a boxed version or even in Help > About depending on which software you have.
For the CPU usage meters, NIS 2011 does not have this on the main screen any more but there is something similar if you click on Performance from the main NIS window.
Best wishes.
Allen
I did not use the beta version at all. I try not to use them due to the bugs usually found in them. Currently, the Symantec programs on my computer now are Norton Utilities 14.5, Norton Ghost 15.0, pcAnywhere 12.1, and Norton Power Eraser (installed but not used as of yet).
One thing I am going to do is run and "diagnose and repair" on my Microsoft Outlook 2007. Perhaps there is a problem with that? But on two computers?
Also, is it possible for NIS 2011 to differentiate between different types of email?
Again, thank you for your help.
Jon
Hi Jon,
Regarding Outlook having problems, anything is possible. This is also why I suggested before checking some of the configuration options in Outlook mentioned in the other thread I linked to earlier.
About NIS differentiating between different types of email, what exactly do you mean? NIS is limited to POP 3 and only works with the standard ports 25 & 110 at this time. However, this is no change from NIS 2010 so since you have said it worked on NIS 2010 this should not be part of your problem.
Best wishes.
