Found this morning that my email had been hacked somehow. Dunno how or where, but it was through browsing on my Windows XP SP3 machine that I somehow crossed paths with it. NIS is updated to the latest everything, but it didn't even have a hint there was a problem. Which I was told about via emails that bounced and a relative telling me 'your email's been hacked'.
I downloaded MalwareBytes: it found something called "malware.packer.as" which I found to be a rootkit that set up spamming operations and tries to replicate itself via my online webmail. Malwarebytes actually appeared to get rid of it on reboot. Then I found Norton Power Eraser and ran that. It appeared clean other than that it flagged my OpenOffice 3.2 installation. Well it needed to be upgraded eventually anyway so I deinstalled it and reran NPE. Clean this time.
But am not exactly happy with NIS. What the heck am I paying for?
