I purchased my NIS 2009 (it rocks vs. previous versions) online, but have learned that we should be able to download a bootable disk image for malware removal at symantec.com. I cannot find a link…anyone know where it might be?

Dear Phil_D,

Hi, I updated from NIS2008 to NIS2009 and just recently I just extended my subscription to another year.

I did not receive any notification on how to download the ISO file for Norton Recovery disk.

Who should I contact?

Thank you

Hi Sea_Monster,

Try contacting Online Chat here.  They might be able to help.

Thank you.

What a hassle!!!

Why can't Symantec provide a link in their website or customers account so that users can download it at anytime.

Can any one in Symantec explained why I did not received any information on the download of NORTON RECOVERY ISO FILE!!!!!!

Because if that was the case then anyone could download that you gave a password to. Tons of people could have a free version of NIS that way. All you had to do was redownload the 15 day trial and put in your licenses. Also when you bought NIS it came with a download which I burnt only a cd with no ISO.

I still think it viable and appropriate, that when I log into my Norton Account, I’d have the option to download the Recovery Disc image. As each license only entails 3 PCs, how much exposure could this really expose Symantec to, if I may end my question w/ a preposition?

Dear mgould3959 ,

Right On !!! I totally agreed with your recommendation.

Thank you

I don't really agree to your point that the recovery tool can be use by the 15 trial users.  I assumed that the recovery tool CD will not work if the 15 days trial expired.  What is a point of anyone keeping the recovery CD when they are required to key in the product key upon boot up.  So if a user trial expire, user not able to use the product key when booting with the CD......as the product key has also expire.

Dear mgould3959 ,

Hi, try the above link and you should be able to download the Recovery Tool. Read the instruction. You'll need your Product Key #

Thank you

Excellent! Thanks so much…just what I was looking for.

Uh, Sea Monster, this is where this thread began.

I downloaded from that page, created the CD, got to the point where you entered your Product Key, entered the NIS2008 key now associated with NIS2009 and was told it was invalid.  I tried various other NIS product keys, used by my other family members.  Same thing.

So when you say it worked for you, what do you mean?  Did you actually test the CD?  Was your product key accepted?  Did you buy NIS2009 or did you upgrade directly from NIS2008 using your still active subscription?

Dear Mijcar,

I was using version 2008 and upgraded to 2009 than renew 1 year sub on my NIS2009.

I was given a new product key for 2009.  And I used the 2009 key without any problems.  Yes, I tried the 2008 key on 2009 recovery tool, it DID NOT WORK.  I would think that it is not possible for you to use your 2008 key for the 2009 recovery tool.

You can try to usethe 2008 recovery tool and key in your current product key to see if it works.

Otherwise, you may need to contact Symantec Customer Services.

Thank you

Sea Monster,

I tried this with other NIS keys and it worked just fine; so you are absolutely right.  I believe the key I tried was for an NIS I have yet to install -- just grabbed the CD off my shelf and didn't check.

Sorry about the confusion this must have produced.

Hi mgould3959,

Here is a brief description of the process from this link:

"Instructions on how to access and download the Norton Recovery Tool .ISO file to create a recovery CD will be provided to you with your purchase confirmation."

Hope that helps.
