Hi all, as of yesterday morning, my laptop started up but did not load Norton Internet Security 2009. I did not notice, but I started my browser and realized that I could not connect to the Internet. My modem and ethernet seem to working fine. I also tried to connect via wireless, and although my laptop says the connection is good, I am still unable to connect.
That is when I noticed that NIS was not loaded. Despite multiple attempts at restart and loading the program manually, nothing happens.
I am concerned that something has disabled my NIS, but I don't understand why that would also disable my connection to the net.
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Please verify if you need to fix your Internet connection first.
Did you just recently changed from wired to wireless ?
Is your wireless connection protected ?
Does it require user authentication and password ?
You will be able to determine the signal strength but you may need to configure your wireless network first.
NIS should automatically start update process when you have this fixed.
Goodluck!
Try starting your computer in Safe mode with Networking. If you are able to connect to the Internet, then go ahead with uninstall/reinstall Norton program.
1. Restart your computer.
2. As soon as the computer starts, tap the F8 key about once per second until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu.
3. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
4. Click Yes to proceed to Safe mode.
Check whether you are able to connect in Safe Mode with Networking.
Thanks guys. I will go ahead and try all these things out and report back.
Hi -
Try it wired first, if possible.
Thanks.

Hi all, thank you again for all your suggestions. First, I just wanted to clarify that my personal connection is wired. The wireless connection is a service that my residential complex provides, but I don't really use it very often.
Alright, so this is what I tried yesterday:
1. I called my ISP. Everything seems fine from their end. I have a valid IP, so I don't think that's an issue.
2. Clicking on the NIS executable has been doing nothing, so I went ahead and manually tried to restart the service. I saw two Symantec Service Framework errors: codatapr.dll and fwsesal.dll
3. I did start my computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' -- and I can connect to the Internet! This definitely points to NIS disabling my connection.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated. It seems like I might have to uninstall and reinstall NIS 2009. If that is the case, how do I go about doing that with no Internet connection?
Hi adrevolution -
Please try the following -
Uninstall NIS 2009 using the Norton Removal Tool - Here is the link:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 Then reboot.
Next reinstall the latest version of NIS 2009 from this link:
http://www.symantec.com/redirects/norton/norton_com/nis09/
You will need your Product Key for the reinstall.
Once completed, try the scan and report back here.
Thanks.

P.S. You can download these onto a USB drive and bring it over to the system we are concerened with.
Hi Compumind:
Is this something I can do under Safe Mode, or is the flash drive a better option?
Thanks!

You can run the Norton removal tool in normal mode itself. Make sure that you run the tool 2-3 times before installing the Norton 2009 program back. This is to completely remove all components from the previous installation. If you face any difficulties in running the tool in normal mode, then only you need to run it in Safe mode. Also, check the Internet Connectivity after running the removal tool. If you are still unable to connect after uninstalling Norton 2009, then we need to check the other troubleshooting steps.
Hi,
Before uninstalling the product. Can you please turn off smart firewall under NIS internet settings & try connecting to internet.
This worked for me :)
