NIS Firewall blocking certain websites

Websites such as http://channelsurfing.net/ are blocked by NIS firewall. The problem is that when I disable the firewall and restart my browser, the site still does not load. I have to restart the computer with the firewall disabled to get the website to work.

How can I force these sites to load up immediately after disabling NIS firewall without having to restart?

Also how can I set the firewall to not block these websites that I want to visit?

It would continue working until i restart the browser. If i restart the browser, it stops working.

Also noticed this. Even with the NIS smart firewall turned off, the website would work for a few minutes then stop working.

This is getting really annoying!

Yeah, it doesn't really sound like the way a firewall behaves.  Which browser are you using?  Try experimenting with connecting to the site while in the browser's safe mode, that is with add-ons disabled.  With IE click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).  For Firefox, Start > All Programs > Mozilla FIrefox (Safe Mode).

EDIT - Flash content may not work in IE in safe mode, but I don't have Flash Player installed in IE so I can't check this myself.  What you want to determine is if you can navigate the site.

Thanks for the help so far

I used both Firefox and IE. I'll try starting them on safe mode and post my results.

Yep exact same results in safe mode on both browsers

So the issue occurs with both browsers?  Hmm.

Yea I never had this problem before on my old computer

What operating system are you using, what version of Norton, and, trust me - this is important, when you created the Windows user account you are using, did you use a space in the account name.  If so do you have an account available that was not named with a space included when you created it?  This latter information is necessary in regards to possible diagnostics that you might run.

Im using Windows 7 Pro 64bit with NIS 17.6.0.32

My user name is David with no spaces. I'm the only user on this machine and has full administrative rights.

Excellent. It will take a few minutes for me to post instructions. Check back here shortly.

You can use the Windows Network Diagnostic Framework in Vista and later versions of Windows to try to solve connectivity issues such as this.  The interesting thing about this is that NIS 2010 and the most current version of Norton 360 are integrated into this tool and if there is a firewall issue it will tell you.  It only works fully if the user account name was created with no spaces (an idiosyncrasy courtesy of Microsoft) - go figure!  Anyway...

In IE8 (you must  use IE8) go to the site that is being blocked.  When you get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen, click the Diagnose Connection Problems button.  If this screen does not appear you can access the NDF by clicking Tools > Diagnose Connection Problems...   If the Norton Firewall is causing a problem you will be presented with either of two screens:

If you are using an account that was created with a space in the user name you may see a box that says "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."  Click the link at the lower left that says "View detailed information."  If the Norton firewall is blocking the communication it will tell you, and it will state the  firewall rule that is causing the problem.  If Norton is not mentioned there, then something other than the firewall is causing the connectivity issue.

If there was never a space in your user name you may instead get a more helpful box that reads "The Norton Firewall can help fix this problem."  Click the "Apply this fix" button, which will bring up the Firewall Diagnostics Wizard.  Here you will find a set of options.  Select whichever one you prefer to use to deal with the situation.

You will not see this "Norton FIrewall can help fix" box if the diagnostic determines that the Norton Firewall is not involved.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I know for a fact that it is NIS smart firewall causing this.

I did not get a "norton firewall can help fix this" option however

In theory, if the Norton firewall is at fault you should have seen the "Norton can help fix" window.  Either the integration of Norton with the NDF is not quite right or something else is the cause.  I will bring this to the attention of the Symantec employee who brought this tool to light and see if we can investigate your situation further.  We've probably done all we can for the moment.

Ahh.. my fault

I assumed that NIS firewall was causing this since the sites started working after disabling it. Turned out it was anti-malwarebytes blocking the site.

Thanks so much for your help Jive

You're welcome, ThumperSD.  Glad you were able to find the cause of your issue.  And it gave us a chance to try out the Norton-integrated NDF tool, which seems to have worked as expected when the Norton firewall is not at fault.  If nothing else, perhaps the results led you to keep looking and eventually track down the true cause of the problem.  Still, I'd love to see that Firewall Diagnostics Wizard in action someday....
