NIS is not working properly

It will hang up in the middle of a system or single file scan.

Hi Goretta,

Welcome to the Norton Community. When did these problems start? Did they start on or around the 9th of this month?

I can see from your log that you have version 18.5.0.125 of NIS which has been problematic for quite a few users.

If these problems started since the 9th, it is advised to revert back to NIS version 18.1.

Please see the following posts for details.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Product-Update-Information-18-5-0-12...

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/18-5-0-125-Lockups/m-p/343050/highli...

Also, if you are willing to help collect information for Symantec to get this problem fixed, please see the following post for information on what they need.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/18-5-0-125-Lockups/m-p/342736/highli...

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Running TM Real Time protection or remnants ?

Hi bjm_

I agree that the web protection add-on could cause a conflict with NIS's browser protection.

The link claims compatibility with NIS but I question that since there is an overlap in protection.

Goretta, I would recommend removing this add-on.

Best wishes.

Allen

What is TmProxy.exe?
This is the Trend Micro Proxy Service Controller. It is installed with Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security software to scan incoming email and to check in the background for viruses on your system.

Real Time protection or remnant ?  Or, part of Trend Micro Web Protection Add-On  ?

Don't know for sure but it is certainly never a good idea to run two products with real-time protection.

It could also be that the core problems are indeed caused by the update to 18.5 since we know that has been problematic for a lot of users.

If I am reading this correctly, the HijackThis log is indicating that the add-on is still installed. I'm not the best at reading this particular log but you will note that the add-on is mentioned in program files and in a registry RUN section.

Best wishes.

Hello

The problem may also be that IE 9 is installed.  Is NIS supporting IE 9 now and does HiJackThis support IE 9? Don't know if related to the problem, but the Java version installed now is quite old also.

Good catch, I glossed over that part. NIS does not formally support IE 9 but some users have reported not having problems with this combination and others have had problems. Most of the problems I can recall being reported in the forum had to do with site safety symbols not working properly, integration with ID safe, etc.

Goretta, please let us know the answer to a few key questions:

  • How long have you been having this problem?
  • Was the web protection add-on or IE 9 recently installed?
  • What version of NIS did you have before it updated to 18.5? Did you have NIS 2010 or the initial version of 2011?

Thanks

Allen

@ AllenM

Thanks...

Hope OP posts back....will be interesting to know if NIS not working properly is related to 18.5 or other

Odds are 18.5 .... as to the TM entries.  " ? "

Thanks again

@ floplot ~ Yes, good catch !

18.5 or other

I started having this problem Dec. 11. 10 in the am. Trend micro was installed on Dec. 15. 09 (last year). I had a free update to NIS 2011 that was installed on Oct. 16. 10. I have just now uninstalled Trend Micro as we speak.

The morning this happened I installed a new version of Dell Support Center and the Dell Data Safe program. When the new Dell Support Center opened up it said I did not have any internet security or anti virus installed!

I always save these type of files to my desktop then scan with Norton before executing them. They automatically installed before I could do this. I have since uninstalled both programs. There was also something called Microsoft Visual C++2005 Redistributable that showed to have been installed the same morning which I did not do. I went to my Windows Update history and it was not listed in there. So I don't know where that came from.

The IE 9 I installed a couple of months ago. I can't find it in my program installed list nor am I able to use it. It is unresponsive. I use it everyday so that is something else that messed up that morning.

I am always real careful about the web sites I visit and what emails I open up. I have not read an 'Ecard' in years! I don't open zip files unless it is from a trusted source and I always scan with Norton before hand. I also save and scan any attachments.

I also am not able to shut down my computer normally since this happened. It hangs up on 'Shutting Down'.

I am overwhelmed and very grateful with the responses and help y'all have given me. I will try each suggestion.

Thanks,

Retta

Hi Retta,

Thanks very much for the update. While it is possible that Trend Micro was part of the issue I am not inclined to think so at this point. However it is best if you do not install it again to prevent any possible conflict. Similarly, IE 9 is not yet officially supported by NIS since it is in BETA but here again I'm not inclined to think it is causing the lockups you are experiencing.

I believe the core problem you are having is because of the 18.5 NIS update which has caused quite a few users to have problems similar to what you describe.

Since Symantec has temporarily pulled 18.5 off the servers I think it is best if you roll NIS back to 18.1.

Please follow the procedure in the following post which includes attempting to uninstall NIS via control panel and reinstall with the links provided. I assume you have the English version, correct?

If the regular uninstall does not work, boot into SAFE mode and try uninstalling again. If you still have problems please let us know and we can assist you with using the removal tool to get things cleaned up.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Product-Update-Information-18-5-0-125-for-Norton-Internet/td-p/342696/jump-to/first-unread-message

Once you have NIS reinstalled you should be at version 18.1.0.37. Be sure to run live update (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates. The problematic 18.5 update will not be pulled down to your computer again.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hallelujah! It works. I uninstalled NIS 18.5 and reinstalled NIS 18.1, updated my Java, defragged and scanned for viruses and everything is hunky dory. I also reinstalled Dell Support center with no problem.

I had tried several times to update Java using Firefox add-on updater and it didn't work. I went directly to the Java console and updated to ver 6 build 22. It is set to automatically update but apparently hasn't been doing it.

I have another computer that is running the new NIS with no problems. It has XP and IE8.

My problem was probably a combination of Vista and IE9, among other things. Who's to know?

Thank you all

I get really depressed when my computer doesn't work.

It's funny, a couple of weeks ago I fixed a friend of mine's computer that had a FAKEAV. Took me a while 'cause I'm not in the same class as all of  y'all:smileyhappy:, so it was upsetting that I couldn't fix my own:smileysad:

This can be marked as 'Solved'!

Thanks again,

Retta

Hello goretta

Thanks for coming back and giving us an update. We are glad that your comjputer is working. I have found that it is best to go to the websites themselves and check to see if you have the latest version. That's what I do with Java and with the Adobe products.

If you consider your problem to be solved, can you please mark the thread as solved by clicking on the post which gave you the solution. This way everyone will know it is solved and will be able to find the solution. Thanks.

Hello goretta

Please check in your Control Panel that you have only one listing for Java ~   6_22

Older versions of Java did not uninstall with install of new version.  Not uncommon to have multiple old Java versions.

New version of Java only uninstall the immediate prior version.  So, again not uncommon to have multiple outdated Java.

This free tool will remove all old versions, any useless files from previous installs except for the version U have just installed

http://raproducts.org/wordpress/javaras-definitions-updated

Simply redownload the program here and you’re ready to go.

*This link takes U to the site - select the Windows Binary (zip) option.

Download Windows Binary (.zip file)

*This will lead U to Sourceforge.net to download it.
*Save the download to desktop.
*Activate the desktop zip icon which exposes the JAVARA EXE file. Click it
*Select RUN when asked.
*Select your language.
*The tool will now appear on the desktop - select REMOVE OLDER VERSIONS
*Once complete select ADDITIONAL TASKS - tick all boxes & activate.
* Right click on the desktop JAVARA zip file & delete it.
Future Updates Of JAVA.
Once all the old JAVA dross is removed future updating is easy.
Go to Start>Control Panel>click on the JAVA icon>select the Update tab>click the Update Now button.
Once the update is complete take the tick out of box marked "Check for
updates auto ....." (This will prevent a useless file called JUSCHED
from being place in your start up menu.

Also please check your FF Add-ons Extensions and Plugins reflect 6_22

Hi Retta,

Thanks very much for the update. Happy to hear things are working good for you again. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.
