NIS LiveUpdate downloads, goes through installation, and then fails.

I have NIS 2014 installed on a Dell XPS computer, which is connected via Ethernet cable to a Cradlepoint MBR95 router which connects wirelessly to the internet via a Novatel USB551L modem. Because I have no access to cable internet, I have a Verizon wireless plan which allows 5 gigs of data per month. NIS automatic liveupdate and pulse updates are enabled.

Recently I was surprised to find e-mail data usage alerts from Verizon saying I was going over my allotted data. This surprised me because I have never even used 3 gigs a month before. Turns out that NIS was downloading a 213 meg liveupdate, then at the end of the update installation, a message appeared saying "installation failed".  Then, 2 hrs later the whole process would repeat again. (Download 200 megs, attempt to install, failed). This went on all night while I was sleeping, and when I got up the next morning I had the e-mail from Verizon that I was way over my data limit and my bill was going out of sight.....

My question is this: How can I prevent liveupdate from continuing to re-download after each failed installation attempt and uselessly using gigabytes of expensive data. Can NIS 2014 be configured to not attempt multiple tries, but to just open a window announcing the installation failure so that the operator (me) can take corrective action? Right now, I am kinda gun-shy of NIS 2004 doing this to me again while I am asleep.....Any suggestions from the community besides disconnecting the modem every time I'm not using the internet?
