I recently renewed my expired NIS to 2010 online. It shows I am renewed, however even though i have run LiveUpdate sucxessfully (it says it has completed the updates), I still get the warning message saying my Virus definitions are outdated and my computer is at risk.
I've run liveupdate a few times now and still the same message will appear from the NIS center.
I did some searching in the Symantec KB and I found a doc that looks like it should help fix this problem. The doc is for fixing the problem is one-click support doesn't automatically fix it, so I just want to make sure you have tried that first of course. Anyway here is the doc, let us know if you need more help.
Thanks, I followed the instructions in the link (date was correct, and autoupdate was on, and i downloaded that file, but when I ran it, it said not all updates could be done) and reran the liveupate and it still says my defninitions are 2 years old.
I'm not sure if this could be a subscription issue stemming from the fact that your subscription had previously expired. To make sure that your subscription status isn't causing the issue open NIS, click "Help & Support" and select "Subscription
Status." Let the status check run. This will synchronize your program with the Symantec servers so that your valid subscription dates are refreshed in your installed version. Run LiveUpdate to get the latest definitions and see if this fixes the problem.
Thanks, I tried that. It said my subscription is up to date and has 'x' days remaining.
When I tried to run the up to date virus definition file from the Norton site, it gave me an error that the Intelligent Updater could not update all files and gave me history log of what the errors are.
From what I can understand, it appears some of the registry key files cannot be updated or accessed.
I am wondering if because my last version was from 2007 and my defninitions were not updated for a long time, if it is causing problems with the current version?
Here is the log I get from the Intelligent Updater:
REG FAILURE: Failed while opening the key from registry. Return code: 2 Thu Mar 25 22:16:23 2010 : DEPLOY DLL LOCATION: IU will read the DLL location from registry - Norton X32 DeployDLL Thu Mar 25 22:16:23 2010 : REG FAILURE: Failed while opening the key from registry. Thu Mar 25 22:16:23 2010 : IU failed while deploying V because a compatible product could not be found on the system. Please make sure that a compatible Symantec product is installed on the system
Is it possible that although I purchased the renewal, it did not update properly?
Did you have any other security program installed when your old NIS expired before you renewed NIS? Since your last NIS was from 2007, how did you install NIS 2010? Since there are several years difference in the 2 programs, I would recommend that you uninstall your Norton product using the Norton Removal Tool and then installing NIS 2010 again.
1. Please have your key ready for your NIS 2010
2. Please download NIS 2010 and save to your desktop
Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.
Please run the Norton Removal tool 2 times with a reboot after each run of it.
Please run NIS 2010 to install NIS 2010. After installing NIS 2010, please run live update until there are no more updates and then reboot one more time.
Please come back and let us know if this helped to solve your problem. Thanks.
When I renewed, I synched my subscription, so I assumed that when I ran the liveupdate, it would have installed the 2010 components. Perhaps I still actually have the 2007 version on my computer, instead of 2010.
How can I tell which version I have? I don't see anything on my Norton application.
I guess my mistake for assuming the renewal would automatically update my software.
On the main page of the program, there should be a place that says Help & Support. If you click on that, there should be a About that you can click on. I think with the 2007 version there was even a separate Live Update component also which needs to be removed. You might still see that component listed in add/remove. Having the new program delete the older program sometimes works ok when it is just the previous years program which needs to be removed, but when there are several years between the two programs that need to be removed, the newest version I don't think would do a clean uninstall and therefore, it can't do a clean install either..
Just want to back up what floplot mentioned; I would do the Norton Removal Tool as the Components of the Norton 2010 Products are slightly different than, say, Norton 2008 Products. Please do let us know how you get on and we'll be glad to help you in any way we can. Any questions or concerns, please let us know before you do anything to prevent complicating things. Many Thanks.
